Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism who later became known as “the Buddha".
Buddha’s teachings are known as “dharma.” He taught that wisdom, kindness, patience, generosity and compassion were important virtues.
Gautama Budhha holds a very important place in history as well as art history, his portraits and sculptures have been an important theme , since 2nd-3rd century. His first statue was made during Gandhara period in Gandhara which is at present in pakistan. Before his statues he was represented by his footprints.
The Gandhara school was the first to represent Buddha in a human form in a roman/hellenistic style mixed with indian.
Then came the Mathura school of art which was inspired by the early indian art.
I made this maquette from Mathura period which basically focuses on drapery and calm features of Buddha.
Then later converted it into a 24 inches sculpture.
Couldn't cast it because it cracked due to hot weather, but this whole experiencing of learning about his life and teachings inspired me.
