The Lion King - sand sculpture

in #art6 years ago (edited)

The 2004 sand season started with this damp squib. I don't have many memorable memories from the project and the sculpture itself wasn't something I'm too fond of.

Another year another pile of sponsorshit

I was back in Scheveningen again as part of a mixed team for a competition. The theme was the lion king, as the stage show was in town and they were one of the sponsors. I've never really been a big fan of Disney since I discovered that nearly all their movies had cookie cutter characters which were the same in nearly every film. It was only when they bought Pixar and the talent that came with them that the characters became 3 dimensional again. (See what i did there).

Copy cats

I can't remember who was on the team with me but that there were many. Our idea was to have the Lion cub trying to show that he was now king and his whole body made of film in the shape of a larger Lion. Definitely nothing deep of meaningful.

Having to make a sculpture which is a promotion and working from the artwork already created by others is a very uninteresting challenge for me. Copying is not my thing and my creativity shifts into neutral gear.

Maybe I am being too hard on this sculpture. it did have one or two elements that were ok and there was a bit of creative freedom in trying to make the large body out of film reel which is the part I worked on most, Animating the frames was also a bit of fun.

Overall though, not one of my favourites but worth documenting nonetheless.

This piece reminds me of the lions king.

This is really awesome .

To be honest I don't think I ever even saw the film. Thank you.

Not too shabby at all!

Maybe I have a bit of a love/ hate relationship with it.
