Hi, This is my first proper post on Steemit and I would like to welcome everyone who is joining me as I show some images of my work. For my first piece I would like to share with you a sculpture I made in 2014 in Weymouth, England as part of the Sand World exhibition. The theme of the overall project was English books and writers. so I decided to do a sculpture based on one of my Favourites 'The Alice's adventures in wonderland'. As a book it has some amazing visual imagery conjured by the beautiful text but it also has some wonderful Illustrations by John Tenniel.
These I decided to base my work on.
Technique
I loved the crosshatched lines in the original woodcut illustrations and wanted to experiment with how I could create a sculpture of a drawing but still have it look like a drawing, so I scratched the surface to add extra shadow where Tenniel had in the originals.
In keeping with the subject I used a big book as a backdrop and the illustration was bursting out of it's pages. On the sides, as support, I made the March Hare and Mad Hatter. The sculpture stood at about 3 meters/ 10 ft tall.
Original Illustration John Tenniel 1865

Hard to believe, that all of this is made of regular sand. Beautiful.
Thank you. Yes just sand and water. The sand in Weymouth is really nice. Very strong when compacted and great for detail.
Great work! Well done! :D
Thanks. It was great source material.

Thank you. The figures at the side were a bit of an afterthought, as I needed support for the structure. With sand you can't go too vertical. I checked out your posts also. Nice work. I'm also building from wood and will upload some projects at a later date. Looking forward to seeing more of your work.
Wow, that's simply beautiful. How large are those sculptures?
Hi, this sculpture is around 3 meters/ 10ft tall butsand is completely scalable. I have worked on ones which are around 6 stories high around 14 meters. More images to come.
Mind-blowing craftsmanship.
Thanks @condra. This steemit thing has got me hooked. Will be blogging my work on a regular bases.
