Fayral Art Deco sculpture restoration

in #art7 years ago (edited)

Pierre le Faguays (Alias Fayral) is a French sculptor of Art-Deco period. He was born in Rezé in 1892 and died on September 8, 1962 in Paris.
The name of this work is " Tourbillon " (Whirlwind)statue plomb1a copy.jpg

He worked with several founders including Max Le Verrier and the Susse foundry.

The sculpture in question was realized by Max Le Verrier. It is in babbitt what explains its state.
Babbitt is an alliage of tin, lead and antimony.

The ribbon that surrounds the dancer is broken into several pieces, it is indeed very fragile. It is the advantage with metal to be able to do very fine things, which is not possible with other materials (earth, stone, wood and even sand or ice-tribute to @ammonite: -) In this case the alloy is too weak for such fineness , it would have been better to use bronze for example.

The difficulty is to re-solder the tape, respecting the original curvature. The repair is done with the torch with a very small nozzle because the alloy is based on tin and lead and melts very quickly.
Next step is to patch the patina.
