We no longer introduce you to the Barcelona architects of Nook Architects, they have just sent us their latest realization, the renovation of an apartment in the neighborhood of Raval, not far from La Rambla.
On entering, the space opens on the main facade which gives on a terrace. Initially the architects were surprised to find that the apartment occupied the entire floor of the building, with a contrast of large and small obsolete spaces and a connection proportionally limited to the huge terrace.
The client, a translator and writer, wanted to move away from the typical functionality of a conventional home and sought a flexible use of space. This large area, initially chaotic, was to become a personal refuge, a work space, as well as a place of welcome for friends and family, without defining too many domains or assigning exclusive functions.
With this strong focus on versatility, the use of parts must be interchangeable so as not to create spatial hierarchy. The kitchen is central and is a link to other areas of the apartment. Another important feature of this project is the shelving, which has made the apartment an important library, while maintaining the feel of an urban refuge in the center of Barcelona.
The kitchen, bathrooms, utility room and storage are interconnected by the central patio, making it easy to move throughout the apartment. The most private area has become an apartment inside the apartment, with a master bedroom, a fully equipped bathroom, a dressing room and a desk.
The shelves have been integrated with the existing wooden beams to give a sense of linearity and ensure continuity from one side to the other of the pieces. The same linear aesthetic was applied to other elements of the apartment, such as the bathroom, kitchen and dressing room.
Once the building has been stripped, new materials and finish textures have been selected based on existing materials. Concrete is used for work surfaces, sinks and to complete the floor covering; wood for shelves and storage and steel for room dividers.
