關於寫作此書,作者謝肅方在自序中提到兩件往事。
一是1995年夏天作者和家人到北威爾斯渡假,參觀哈萊克城堡。在城樓拾級而上,途中作者為弓箭手之窗(又稱箭縫 arrowslit)所吸引而停歇。城牆上的視野雖然廣闊開揚,卻容易分散注意力。相比起來,透過弓箭手之窗的細縫,視野聚焦在通過城鎮的幹道上。作者想像古時的看守者就從這道窗戶,俯視每天進出城鎮的人和事。而作者以中華射藝這一冷門狹窄的題材書寫,就正如那道弓箭手之窗,給予觀察歷史流變一個獨特的焦點。

二是1997年作者在上海一位研究甲骨文的教授的辦公室,提到自己正計劃寫一本關於中華射藝的書,預計會寫十二篇章,引來教授訕笑 ──教授單單以自己研究的商代甲骨文當中與射箭相關的材料,就可以寫十二章了。雖說弓箭射藝是個冷門題目,卻在中華數千年文明中一直都佔重要地位,古物文獻不勝枚舉。以中華射藝為題撰文論述,其挑戰從不在材料稀缺,而在於如何將海量資料理出脈絡。
與中國相似,弓箭在英國也有段悠久的歴史。即使到了現在,射箭,甚至製作弓箭,在英語國家仍然是項受歡迎的嗜好。然而中華射藝的傳承到了近代卻幾乎斷絕,沒有人記得如何拉開一把中式傳統弓,更遑論知道如何去製作一把傳統弓。究竟為何?
作者正是抱著這個疑問,開始他探索中華傳統射藝之旅。此書正是他多年的研究心得。
