Mobile Suit Gundam Review

Char Aznable Kick!

Released in 1979, Mobile Suit Gundam began, and almost ended, the popular Gundam franchise.

Originally only released in Japan, Mobile Suit Gundam defined large fighting robot shows with its cool designs and well done combat.

Mobile Suit Gundam shocked a number of people when it was released, taking a much more serious tone, and showing large piloted robots, called mobile suits, being applied to warfare, going against the status quo and making it largely disliked. Now people appreciate its unique style, and with its good character design, dire situations, and grim,  semi-realistic look at warfare, its easy to see why it has aged into such a great anime.

The characters in Mobile Suit Gundam are well thoughtout, although a bit dated due to how old the anime is. The main character, Amuro Ray, has a good story arc, and you enjoy and connect with him as he deals with piloting the mobile suit “Gundam”, an advance mobile suit outclassing almost all others during the One Year War. With notably enjoyable characters on both sides, such as Char Aznable, one of the coolest enemies in any show, and Mr.Bright, an inspirational leader who knows when to smack teenagers so they’ll go fight in a mobile suit, many wonderful characters riddle the 43 episodes of Mobile Suit Gundam.

Mobile Suit Gundam takes place during the One Year War, a war between the Principality of Zeon and the Earth Federation. This provides a woeful and interesting setting as Amuro Ray and White Base, a new high tech space ship, flee from Zeon forces, lead by Char Aznable. Constantly being peppered with Zeon attacks, you get to watch as both sides mental state grows darker, with Zeon forces being intimidated with the awesome power of the Earth Forces new mobile suit, and White Base’s crew become more desperate and exhausted from Zeon attacks. This helps develop the characters and make an interesting plot.

Mobile Suit Gundam’s wide dislike caused to finish early, but the Gundam franchise was saved by the creation of Gundam Plastic Models.

Mobile Suit Gundam is a great show, with interesting and dark story, good characters, and awe-inspiring Mechs.
