Fate/Stay Night Review

in #anime7 years ago (edited)

(Guy in back: Archer, Girl in front: Rin Tohsaka)

Fate/Stay Night is one of the routes in the Fate anime series (there are different versions I guess you could say, and Fate/Stay night is one). Each of the different "routes" or versions focuses on a different female character. Fate/Stay night's main character is a high school boy named Shirou Emiya, who is a goody-goody who always tries to help others. He is the main character, but the main female character "Saber", a powerful night who has come from the past to help Emiya succeed in the "Holy Grail", is very important in the story. The anime has two main points: love and the "Holy Grail".

(Left: Shirou Emiya, Right: Saber)

The Holy Grail is a powerful item that can grant a person the ability to have any one wish that they want. But they must win the Holy Grail War. The Holy Grail war is a war that happens every 10 years and pits 7 masters (each master gets a servant) against each other. So basically people are fighting in teams of 2 (which consists of the master and the servant). Therefore everyone is trying to survive and kill the other teams. The masters are magical users (people who can use magic or from magical bloodlines) who are chosen by the Holy Grail to participate, so not just anyone can be a master and participate in the Holy Grail Wars. Meanwhile, the servants (who assist the masters in their quest to get the Holy Grail), are legendary heroes from past eras.

(^This AMV is what got me interested in watching Fate)

I would give Fate/Stay night a 6.5/10. It was good, but not extraordinary. Originally I started watching Fate/Stay Night because I saw a cool amv (I have it above) and from the AMV I assumed that Fate/Stay Night was going to only be about fighting. But the best fight (in my opinion) happens in one of the first few episodes between lancer and archer, but afterwards the fights are not so intense or detailed. The latter fights are alright, but not enough to quench my thirst. Especially considering that the main point of the anime is suppose to be the "Holy Grail", I assumed that there would be a huge war and lots of battles.

But to my surprise, the anime does go on with the theme of the Holy Grail, but also delves into love. When I was watching the anime on kissanime.com, I saw that Romance was a genre within the anime, but I figured that it would just be a little subtle thing in the story. But it actually becomes an important part of the anime. I was also surprised by who the main character falls in love with, since I thought for sure that he would go for a more obvious person (sorry, but I'm trying not to spoil anything, so I won't give a name ;) ). Also, the epilogue seems to focus on Rin Tohsaka, so I originally thought she was the main character lol

Anyways, I think that it is an interesting anime and I will have to watch the other fate series (Unlimited Blade Works, Heaven's Feel, etc), but it did not meet my expectations. I think that Fate/Stay Night is the first one in the series that was made though and I was told that the other, newer series are better, so I look forward to seeing them.
