Aww. I wonder if they have to reach a certain age before they rattle?
I have heard (probably just hearsay) that rattlers are using their rattles less and less as their generations go on. By warning those nearby to stay away, the sound also alerts potential predators to their exact position.
It sounds logical, but I don't know if it's actually true.

We took her and let her go at the local pipeyard. She was a sweetie indeed. Wouldn't rattle for us though.
