We were headed down the highway today when I barely missed a box turtle in the road, almost to the divided white lines between the lanes on our side. We doubled back to get it, but did we make it in time?
Yes!!! I pulled over to the shoulder, smashed the 4-ways and Angela jumped out to grab it. However, she had to wait while two cars passed. Talk about biting your fingernails! Thankfully the cars missed the turtle and she nabbed it! We drove right across from where it was headed and set it down in the same direction it was originally headed.
From the looks of its shell, this was a very old turtle, too! Check out the growth rings!
According to Wikipedia
Common box turtle numbers are declining because of habitat loss, roadkill, and capture for the pet trade. The species is classified as Vulnerable to threats to its survival by the IUCN Red List.
The Common box turtle has been known to attain the greatest lifespan of any vertebrate outside of the tortoises. One specimen lived to be at least 138 years of age.

Lucky little guy! Glad he made it safely to his destination.
Seriously lucky!!!
I LOVE turtles! We always rescue them!
Us too! High Five
Yay one turtle saved! Happy to know there are animal lovers who don't have to own them! Keep up the love!
Absolutely... let wild be wild! :)
Yes, great job! Thank you(:
My husband always saves turtles on the side of the road. Hes up to 5 this season and an alligator :o And I had a turkey run across the road yesterday haha
We've seen more box turtles this year, than ever before. We're only up to 4. ;-) Did he happen to get to ask the turkey why it was crossing the road?
He wasn't with me haha. I've never seen a wild turkey before
They're pretty popular out our way... must not be a lot of turkey hunters ;) Saw a lone turkey grazing the field with the neighbor's cows Saturday. He was just hanging out, too! LOL
I hope there are a lot near us, it's something my husband wants to try hunting!
Nice rescue! I'm sure that turtle is very thankful for the @greenacrehome Rescue squad!! Lol
