- Leopard Slug -
- Genus : Limax -
- Family : Maximus -
Etymology
from Greek limax meaning "slug/snail", and maximus- meaning "greatest/largest".
Location
Native to Europe, but now found worldwide due to accidental introduction.
Size
4-8in or 10-20cm
What do they eat
Omnivorous, both plant and other lifeforms. They clean up dead plants and fungi, and are known to pursue other slugs at a top speed of 6 inches (15 cm) per minute. They eat fresh crops at a higher rate than they can grow, and so they are listed as a major agricultural pest by state departments of agriculture in the US.
Reproduction
This species has a unique mating procedure. The pair of slugs use mucus to hang suspended in the air from a tree branch (like Spider-Man). They then proceed to create life while airborne.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this post. Animals are some of the most interesting things on Earth, in my opinion. There is an endless amount of species. I aim to write more posts in the future about unique creatures that exist on our planet. Stay tuned for more content like this.
