Meerkats are small, burrowing mammals of the mongoose family. Native to the Kalahari Desert in Southern Africa, meerkats live in underground burrows and are very social animals, living in groups of up to 30 individuals. Meerkats are known for their upright stance and their habit of standing on their hind legs to survey their surroundings.
Meerkats are members of the mongoose family and are closely related to other mongoose species. Meerkats live in social groups and are known for their cooperative behavior. Meerkats have been studied extensively by biologists and anthropologists.
The first recorded use of the word "meerkat" was in 1678, by Dutch explorer Pieter van den Broecke. Van den Broecke noted that the animals were kept as pets by the people he encountered in what is now South Africa. Meerkats were first described scientifically in 1778 by German naturalist Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber.
Meerkats became popular in zoos and as pets in the 19th century. In the 20th century, meerkats were featured in several films and television shows. The most famous meerkat is probably Timon from the Disney film The Lion King.
Today, meerkats are still popular as pets and in zoos. They are also used in research on animal behavior.
