Ancient Indian techniques on rainfall prediction

in #ancient7 years ago

Ancient Indian techniques for rainfall prediction in a given year is a real interesting topic to learn about.

The ancient Indian Vedic rainfall prediction technique has its own unique beauty for estimating the time & amount it will rain, as it is the simplest and more accurate way of predicting rains. This technique is based on the positions of the Sun, Planets and the stars (named Nakshatra's) also called the Indian Constellation. In all there are 27 Nakshatra's as per the Vedic culture.
Following are the Rain Nakshatra's out of the 27 Nakshatra's that determine the rains:

  1. Mrug (Lambda Orionis)
  2. Adra (Alpha Orionis)
  3. Punarvasu (Beta Gemin orium)
  4. Pushya (Delta Cancri)
  5. Ashleysha (Alpha Hydroe)
  6. Magha (Regulus)
  7. Purva (Delta Leonis)
  8. Uttara (Beta Leonis)
  9. Hasta (Delta Corvi)

In addition to the positioning of the Sun and the Nakshatra's, some more techniques of rainfall prediction known to me are:

  1. On the day of Holi (Full moon day of Phalgun month), it's a tradition to lighten up fire. As the fire aroses, above 18 feet of height the direction of the smoke determines the chances of heavy or light rains as per the Varahavihirasasti technique.

  2. On the day of Akshay tritiya, the 4 slots of 24 minutes each before Sunrise, gives the estimate of the rainfall during the 4 months of the rainy season.

To conclude with, the ancient Vedic culture is far more advanced in not only determining the rainfall prediction in a particular year, but also in day to day life.

There are far more interesting and exciting topics to hear and learn about. I assure you to keep on posting as much as I learn on my upcoming posts.

Till then Have a Good Day 🤗
