The "common wisdom" regarding unions in America is that they are the only thing keeping workers from subsistence wages. The fact that this idea is taught in government schools by union members should make the "common wisdom" suspect to anyone with half a brain.

Unions monopolise labor. They are in reality small goverments.
I think that's another way of looking at them. They monopolize the labor in an industry and protect it through force so that they can create artificial scarcity.
