Have to agree with your sentiments. Education is the most important thing for our youth and has a lot to do with their future. I do think though that there are basics that are hugely important, one of which is reading lots. A lot of my teachers were useless and were just doing a job, not particularly caring about the outcomes. I don't know about the USA, but in general I don't think we pay teachers enough and therefore we get what we pay for.
