WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US President Donald Trump on Wednesday described the results of the congressional midterm elections as a big day for Republicans, saying it was the biggest party gain since former President John F. Kennedy.
"Yesterday was a big day, a wonderful day," Trump said at a White House press conference. "The Republican Party has challenged history to strengthen our majority in the Senate while at the same time it has largely thwarted expectations in the House of Representatives."
"We managed to get 55 seats in the Senate, the largest of its kind in the last 100 years," he said.
The Republican Party strengthened its dominance of the Senate, while the majority lost in the House of Representatives. "Our efforts have prevented a (blue wave) from the Democrats," Trump said.
Commenting on the election results, the president said there was a chance to improve relations with Democrats. "Despite the majority we have achieved in the Senate, we remain keen on working together," he said.
"I respect what Nancy Pelosi has said about the need to work together away from party," Trump said, adding that Congress could reach understandings in the areas of infrastructure and health care.
