RE: THE PYROPHORUS - A CLICK BEETLE WITH HEADLIGHTS!

in #amazing7 years ago

I've never seen the bioluminescent click beetles in person! I've always wanted to!

Click beetles are fun to play with. They were really rare in El Paso (for us, anyways), but they were always everywhere here in Missouri. The first time I brought Nova up to Kansas City to visit (he was adopted in El Paso, and we travelled back and forth for several years prior to moving back) the bugs were plentiful and he was way overstimulated.

Sometimes I go outside with him in the evenings to let him chase the fireflies. He can catch them without killing them, too! (I let them loose in the house so they can entertain the cats overnight, then they usually find their way out through a hole by the the door by morning.)

Nova was afraid of click beetles at first. Cosmo and Tuxie, who both grew up with them, weren't bothered or even that interested in them. Now Nova just loves stepping on them to make them click their way to freedom.
