농구는 미국에서 가장 인기 있는 스포츠 중 하나입니다. 인기만큼이나 농구를 좋아하고 코트위의 수퍼스타를 꿈꾸는 어린 선수들이 많습니다. 하지만 실제 아마추어 선수에서 NBA 코트 위의 프로 선수로 데뷔하는 기회를 가질 수 있는 확률은 매우 희박하다고 합니다.
영화에서도 나오지만 50만 명의 아마추어 선수들 중에서 프로 선수가 되는 수는 단지 30명. 확률로 따지면 0.00006% 입니다. 이렇게 희박한 가능성을 뚫고 프로 선수로 데뷔한다고 해도 부상이나 부진에 시달려 팀에서 방출되는 경우도 드물지 않습니다. 국내 연구에서도 전체 학생 선수의 90%는 중도 탈락한다고 합니다. 그러나 누구도 이러한 냉정한 현실을 곧이곧대로 어린 선수들에게 말해주지 않습니다.
미국의 경우에는 대학 진학시에 운동 능력 이외에 학점 제한을 두어 학업과 운동을 병행하도록 하고 있습니다. 그러나 국내의 경우에는 절반 이상의 선수들이 정상적인 수업에 참여하지 못하고 있으며 이는 기초학력 형성에 문제가 될 수 있습니다. (영화에서는 미국에서조차 농구 선수들의 학점을 위해 비정상적인 수업 참여와 시험이 진행되는 것을 볼 수 있습니다.) 이처럼 어린 나이부터 운동을 시작하는 학생들은 운동 이외의 다른 학문을 접하거나 배울 수 있는 기회가 애초에 차단되고 있다는 것을 알 수 있습니다.
설혹 누군가는 “운동 선수가 운동만 잘하면 되지, 다른 학문을 배울 필요성은 없지 않는가?” 라며 반문할 수 있습니다. 아무도 범접할 수 없는 절대 기량을 가진 선수라면 맞는 말일 수도 있으나 예상하기 힘든 창의적인 플레이와 세트플레이를 요구하는 현대의 스포츠에서는 단편적인 생각일 수 있습니다.
