Why should universities dominate the artificial intelligence revolution?

in #ai7 years ago

Instructor Nick Jennings conveyed his thoughts on why universities should take place in the heart of the artificial intelligence revolution.

Most of the exciting developments in artificial intelligence technology take place in research-intensive universities. This indicates that artificial intelligence will be shaped by a multitude of initiatives, academic researchers and students, not by a handful of corporate companies.

A system of different actors in which universities play a central role can save artificial intelligence from falling into the wrong hands of Internet technologies. Just a few weeks before Mark Zuckerberg accepted the Cambridge Analytica scandal, World-Wide Web investor Tim Berners-Lee expressed regret over "the creation of a new kind of gateway controller that controls what platforms and ideas are in the forefront of a few platforms on the Internet." But universities are helping to preserve the diversity of artificial intelligence technology.

The artificial intelligence has the potential to transform society in a striking way, and we are witnessing how the universities are working on this issue. Machine learning techniques enable faster diagnosis of diseases, better understanding of human behavior, and better protection against cyber attacks. Artificial intelligence systems help us not to make scientific discoveries. E.g; creating hypotheses, designing and implementing experiments, analyzing data, deciding what to do next, and so on.

It's almost a day after we have not been alerted by robots to people doing business. Artificial intelligence is most efficient when it is used in business associations with people. When we turn our strengths on, we can do jobs that computers or people can not do separately. The machines do not know what they do not know. Moreover, they do not know how to interact with people. That's why artificial intelligence's best practices come together with the speed and effectiveness of computers and the ability of people to reason and empathize.

Above all, it is also vital that these transformations are driven by various innovators, as artificial intelligence has deeply changed our economy and our society. Universities are at the center of these transformations and should take them. Universities are home to academic talents, brilliant and creative students who manage the world, innovative venture companies. For example, at the Imperial College London, the Intervention Lab provides space and support for students and entrepreneurs to test their ideas. A student named Pae Natwilai made a 'magic wand' where the interaction between the drone and the other robots towards where you want to move.

Pae originally thought that the product could only be used as a toy, but she saw that the product could be used in an end-to-end application area by the university's program for women entrepreneurs. Natwilai's 'magic bar' offers fast and inexpensive damage detection if major buildings are damaged. Very few institutional centers are as agile as Pae because Pae has an academic background that supports him.

The artificial intelligence innovations that are born in the universities usually take advantage of social benefits rather than profits. This year's WE Innovate finalist Charlotte McIntyre develops a machine learning technique that predicts the likelihood of a patient developing thyroid cancer by examining ultrasound scans, needle biopsies and disease history quickly and accurately. The machines have boundaries, but the human-artificial intelligence business unit has a potentially significant improvement in health care.

For example, after a Nepalese earthquake, a university team working with the Rescue Global disaster-relief agency decided to put waterfilters where they could best fit in Katmandu by combining reliable human observations and the ability to perform massive data analysis of artificial intelligence. The artificial intelligence revolution aims to provide collective benefit as a whole. Universities must naturally take place in the heart of this revolution.
