Autocractic Rwanda - The Next Singapore?

in #africa7 years ago

While certainly no bastion of individual freedom Rwanda has been one of Africa's fastest growing economies for a long time.

Paul Kagame has secured a change to the constitution that is going to allow him to rule for many years to come. Not a good thing for a free press but look what an autocratic system has done economically for Singapore or what an absolute monarchy has done for Dubai.

As an anarcho-capitalist I of course despise such systems but there is no denying that not having to be a populist in order to win votes can lead to a clear focus on development and tremendous economic growth.

This 4 minute video clip give a good summary about what's going on in the country:

A good friend of mine is currently on his way to check out the situation himself and I'm curious what he will have to say when he comes back. Rwanda is definitely on the short list for my next Africa trip.
