My village Askole

in #advetuelover3 months ago

Askole is a small, remote village located in the Shigar Valley of Baltistan, in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan. It is often referred to as the "gateway to K2," as it is the last inhabited settlement on the way to the base camps of several of the world's highest peaks, including K2, Broad Peak, and the Gasherbrum mountains. The village sits at an elevation of approximately 3,000 meters (9,843 feet) above sea level and is known for its rugged terrain and harsh climate.

Askole is the starting point for expeditions to K2, the second-highest mountain in the world, as well as other prominent peaks in the Karakoram range. Trekkers and mountaineers heading to Concordia, the Baltoro Glacier, and beyond usually pass through Askole.

Due to its remote location, Askole is one of the most isolated villages in Pakistan. The journey to the village requires traveling on narrow, treacherous roads. During the winter months, heavy snowfall can cut the village off from the rest of the region. The inhabitants of Askole are of Balti ethnicity, with a rich culture deeply influenced by Tibetan traditions and Islamic practices. The Balti language, a dialect of Tibetan, is spoken here, and the community has maintained a way of life that is closely tied to the natural environment.

The people of Askole live in a challenging environment, where agriculture is limited by the harsh climate, and resources are scarce. However, they have adapted to the extreme conditions through centuries of experience. Askole's importance has grown with the increase in trekking and mountaineering activities in the region. During the climbing season, the village sees an influx of international climbers and trekkers, providing a vital source of income for the local economy. However, tourism also brings challenges related to environmental preservation and resource management.

Local Support Organizations (LSOs): To support sustainable development in the area, LSOs like Braldo in the Shigar Valley work on various projects related to education, health, and infrastructure, benefiting the local community while preserving their traditional way of life. AKRSP, CKNP, GBRSP etc are the supporting organizations..
