21ST CENTURY SKILLS THAT WE MUST HAVE

The rapid development of science and technology in the 21st century will have consequences for the magnitude of the challenges we will face for the present and the future.

with the greater challenges we must have 21st century skills that will help us to face these challenges. According to the 21st Century Education framework developed by the World Economic Forum (WEF), there are 16 important skills that need to be prepared and owned by us so that we survive and succeed now and in the future.

The sixteen skills are divided into 3 major groups, namely foundational literacies, competencies, and character qualities.

FOUNDATIONAL LITERACIES

Foundationan literacies or basic literacy are skills related to our ability to apply core skills in everyday tasks.

Skills related to basic literacy consist of:

  1. Literacy (literacy, skills related to text and language)
  2. Numeracy (numeracy, skills related to numbers)
  3. Scientific literacy (scientific literacy, skills related to scientific thinking)
  4. ICT literacy (skills related to the use of information technology)
  5. Financial literacy (financial literacy, skills related to decision making related to personal finance)
  6. Cultural and civic literacy (skills related to cultural understanding and civic rights)

COMPETENCIES

Competence is a skill that is related to our ability to face and handle the complex challenges that lie before it.

Skills related to competencies are:

  1. Critical thinking / problem-solving (critical thinking skills and solving problems in front of him)
  2. Creativity (creativity, skills using perspective and new solutions to solve challenges)
  3. Communication (skills related to the communication capacity with a variety of different people)
  4. Collaboration (skills related to the capacity to synergize and collaborate with team members to achieve shared goals)

CHARACTER QUALITIES

Character qualities are character qualities that are skills related to self, including:

  1. Curiosity (skills related to natural curiosity to find out about new things happening around him)
  2. Initiative (skills related to the capacity to start a thing or initiative without waiting for orders from others)
  3. Persistence / grit (skills related to self-management that are able to overcome problems until finally survive and can finish to the end)
  4. Adaptability (skills related to the capacity to adjust and flexibility to deal with external changes that occur)
  5. Leadership (skills to lead groups towards shared goals)
  6. Social and cultural awareness (skills in recognizing and responding to a variety of social and cultural phenomena)
