Two thumbs up @rossenpavlov... it's time the community stood and let itself be heard. I've seen too many sites shut down over precisely this kind of stuff, if it is left unattended.
I know there are those who are all about "no censorship" but if leaving something unattended means the demise of the entire VENUE, then "no censorship" makes no SENSE. I also know there are those who believe everything will be OK, simply "because we're on the blockchain."
It's maybe TRUE that Steemit can't "go bankrupt," but the platform CAN become known as a "shitcoin" and the idea of 1/2 cent Steem does not really appeal to me.
So... well said.
Abusive downvoting will have the same effect - if you are going to do it, make bloody sure you have a very good reason to do so ... OBJECTIVELY SPEAKING. Not just some arbitrary dislike ... one image can speak a thousand words, one line of text can be more profound than 10 000 words of mindless nonsense.
Yes, I think I know what I'm doing :)
OBJECTIVELY SPEAKING this dude doesn't even deserves an internet connection
https://steemit.com/@shahaalam19/comments
Obviously you DO NOT! The person you are attacking is obviously 1) New to the platform, and 2) Does not speak English. I see nothing 'malicious' in what he is doing .. I see a person who can not communicate well, who wishes to increase his follower base .. so yes, he is spamming the same comment over and over, each time he upvotes a post in order to do so ... I agree this is not good, but the individual needs 'help' .. needs 'coaching' .. does not need to be insulted and beat up.
"Doesn't even deserve an internet connection!?" ... what the fuck man? What if someone thought that about you, someone who had the ability to completely shut down your activity on this blockchain, as you have done to this slightly misguided individual, simply because he can not speak English and has not found his 'community' yet.
People should not try to raise themselves up, by stepping on others .. it's unethical and assholie. :-)
Tere is a fine line between not speaking proper English and spamming. There are plenty of people out there who's mother language is not English and still, have no problem communicating. Spam is just spam, it's simple as that.
.. well you go for it ..hope it brings you and us all good luck, we are going to need it. At least do the constructive thing, before you pound -out theae poor little folk, give them some warning... give then a chance to change their ways.
My english is very bad and was wors when i first joined steemit but you have to look at statistik with 500 coments a day - Good post . I consider miself helpfull as many other people just there must be some limit . I wont flag people just because , i will flag the spam coments and i will add the reson for it .
This comment made my day. Up voted. :D keke
You are correct @kurtbeil , An image can speak a thousand words and yes, one line of text can be more profound than 10k words of mindless nonsense. But I think when the picture is of someone eating from loops for breakfast or a line of text, with 25% of it saying 'please up vote me' its pretty safe to say that this is rubbish. But I totally understand your point and agree with you of being at least a little mindful with your flagging's. Maybe its called common sense? :)
Very true, Shitcoin = shit content.
Translation = Facebook
Hey everyone! I just want to jump in here because I am in complete agreement with @rossenpavlov and @denmarkguy... when I first joined (1 month ago) I read a post that said we need to flag shit posts and comments to keep the integrity of the platform. When I first started receiving comments, I couldn't be sure what was real and what wasn't but you get the hang of differentiating pretty quickly and I began noticing a lot of this behaviour and got discouraged myself so I asked in Discord about it and everyone told me that flagging will only start a flag war and never to do it! I thought, 'what kind of message is that?" We just let people come on here and troll all day when there are people putting tons of time and effort into sharing their content and it's getting bombarded with all of this bogus? I'm happy to hear you're taking a stand because I tell you, I was starting to lose faith in this after my conversation about flagging. One day, my account got shut down because I used my bandwidth by actually commenting (real comments like this) on too many posts. I was so upset, I couldn't even post my blogs I had been working on. I think we need to work together as a community to stop this bahvior before it gets out of hand and trolls take over what could be a game changer for social media. Hat off to you for this post, I am in your corner as well!
=D
(Sorry for the rant, this has been bothering me!) Obviously it needs to be responsible and non-aggressive. I have seen people send warning flags with friendly messages (not sure of the effectiveness but love the idea)!
The thing is when you start you don't have much influence and it's very risky to start flagging, but as your Steem Power grows you become immune to small fish spamming. As you said, we as a community have the obligation to make Steemit the best blogging platform on the web, and it's all in our hands.
Well exactly and when you first come in, (speaking from experience) it's all new territory and there are so many articles on here with (not so great) advice. I noticed that it took me some time to get used to things and I am sure it's the same or similar for most. It's good just to set little reminders to those who are posting like this, almost as if we just assume they don't know any better. I think it's a friendly way to keep the site's quality up and remove the spam. :)
Totally agree with you. With or without flags Steemit is censorship free because once something is put on the blockchain it stays there forever. We should embrace the flag, and use it the other way around. It's no secret that the highest paid authors are not the best ones, and even If I upvote on less popular the rich are going to get richer. By flagging the abusers, all the really good authors will stand out. After all, Steemit is about quality content and interaction and it's up to all of us to make it happen. If we don't stand up for ourselves this place is doomed.
@rossenpavlov down voted and pummeled my account into the ground for no good reason. Looks like he has spent the last year trashing peoples accounts. Can you all please help me and down vote this guy's content to let him know how it feels
Flags are good when they are used for good. Flags are bad when they are used incorrectly.
I think spam deserves a flag when it is also accompanied with a vote (value)
Otherwise, it's pretty easy for me to ignore.
Everyone has a different opinion on this, and I think the problem is the lack of any basic rules/regulations determined and accepted by the society as a whole. It's kinda like the wild west out here.
You may be right, but there is definitely a Steemit etiquette out there.
Yea. Also, I make it a point to reward every unique comment on my posts(if only a little bit) to make sure the spam stays at the bottom lol
I wonder if anyone ever compiled a proper "code of conduct"?

Awesome, thanks! It was there all along haha
Are you for real!?
I'm taking this one down
same here @dumar022
I've been doing this too. I only flag with a few percent, but I hope it indicates that their behaviour is unacceptable. They are making Steemit worse.
I know some people consider flagging to be some form of abuse, but it's just moderation. It can and has been abused, but that's a different issue
Well, the way I see the flag is a metaphor for a knife, you can make supper with it, or it can be used as a weapon to kill someone. It has to have the proper motive.
I don't want to kill anyone, but I hope to steer them to a better path :)
Nice one
This is a great idea. I have seen this done as well. I wrote my big rant on the topic above so I won't repeat it again here but I agree something needs to be done to discourage this behaviour and promote a valuable platform for us all to benefit from. The shit posts ruin it. I get so frustrated seeing people misuse this opportunity. Hopefully together we can nip it in the bud by sending gentle friendly reminders to those who may not know that this is not the intention of the platform :)
Of course one needs to realize that this is the first decentralized social network, in other words, it's up for the community to take care of it and head it in the right direction. We are exporing new teritories here and we make the rules as we come along. Steemit had much bigger issues in the past, I'm sure this will be resolved sooner or later.
Yes absolutely! If we work together, we can decide how this platform will be and that is an incredible opportunity! Of course we need to recognize that there are people here who are ignorant (they don't realize they are doing anything 'wrong' or 'disliked') they are just trying ways to get more votes and I understand that, I would just like to see it geared more in the direction I believe it was meant for and that is sharing quality content :)
When money is involved people get greedy.
You don't get it do you?
You know I don't really care that much about the spam, what really frustrates me is that these people will not read a single line of your post and crap on it. And here's a clear example.
use it
HAha, nice one!
Pavlov. totally agree - there is so much junk that spams the bandwidth and swallows quality posts.
Downvoting is fine, if you have a decent rep - as you do. Anyone below that - it's risky.
Don't ever downvote someone with a rep higher than yourself - as it will not affect their rep, but a downvote from them will impact one's own rep.
I am starting with going critically through my feed and unsubscribe to all many who have not engaged once, particularly where I commented on their posts.
Use the MUTE feature - I haven't yet - but it is there for the taking.
As my reps are still baby minnow territory - I focus on positive re-enforcement.
But right on - I am all for moving usurpers to the forgotten corners of Steemit from where they can ponder what quality content means.
It really is Steem Power rather than the reputation that gives weight to flags. But as you said we should get rid of bad quality content so new users can excel.
Woow this post is really high value because it opens a dialogue about the quality of steem posts. Yeah a low quality picture a one line post are not worthy of existing on Steemit although if it is someones first post then everyone should be considerate.
@rossenpavlov down voted and pummeled my account into the ground for no good reason. Looks like he has spent the last year trashing peoples accounts. Can you all please help me and down vote this guy's content to let him know how it feels
I start flag to - Reason spam !
Join the club!
I started to flag those comments on my own posts five days ago. I think that I finally got rid of them
I know I'm not the only one, thank you. Lets clean this place up!
And I think that flag is a tool used for nothing and we should use it for something. It's not so big deal to be flagged
I think it has a strong psychological effect. The way it sounds and the fact it's red. Just like powering down it sounds like something negative but it's actually the opposite.
I just unfollow or mute garbage.
It helps you, not the platform as a whole.
That's why you posted this, I'm not seen enough yet to make a difference with a post like this. When that happens, then I can make some ripples and help the platform as a whole.
We are all together in this. Steem on!
I've been flagging some obvious scam types as well. And making comments. I never thought I would but if you go down the new list I can never make it past 20 minutes in with out passing 20 posts with 1 picture for a lvl 25.
This has to change.
what was shahaalams reputation before this post :-)
That is probably one of the worst posts to spam
It was 7
He got lucky today, he lost only one reputation point.
Flag away i say - if i had 1 x steem for every "follow me back " comment i have seen in the last 2 months,i would be a whale by now
lol, but true.
I was just thinking this the other day. I'm sick of the 'just links' posts going on. Please be mindful and write something, anything....even if people think your opinion is wrong or different, that is a good thing. Just no more mindless copycats please. That is left for Facebook and twitter.
@alhoppo thanks
Sometimes a single upvote is more than enough. Thank you for stopping by.
I'm afraid to comment on this post... but I couldn't agree more ;). It's really lame and ruins the whole experience. I'd LOVE that over the course of time, these no value posts get drowned out and all the cream rises to the top! One can dream anyway :)
Nothing to be afraid of. Some people come here for the interaction and this spamming really kills it.
Yeah, I was just kidding. Didn't only want to put "I agree" ;).
Just seen a post right after this one that literally has a subject of "Vote" and "Vote for me i do the same" as the whole post. Extraordinary! I also had someone comment "nice" on one of my posts, not even "nice post" haha.
You're right, it kills it... hopefully it will all go in the right direction!
spam them away !! at first I was sympathizing with them I mean am one of them but in the end it comes down to who you are! at the beginning I thought "hey, I can just say follow and be a smart ass lol and just say ...
but I knew i had to change so i started studying steemit...
these easy money wannabes ...
they have to ask questions not money
it's all good energy tho
:D
Being your self is probably the best advice any one can give you. The other thing is it isn't really profitable, If people did earn money by spamming I see the incentive, but Steemit just does not work this way.
they will learn or leave eventually...
I have the solution here.
Hey, this can actually work!
Thanks, I agree :)
Yeah this has been going on for long enough. I will join you and become more aggressive in flagging these spam comments.
A lot of them are just bots anyway so until they get downvoted to negative rep they'll never stop.
Thanks, the more the better!
