Tales of the Urban Explorer: The Not-So Paranormal House

It was almost mid-February; the deep winter freeze and my hibernation were at an end. Daylight hours were still limited but my feet were super itchy, and for once it was not the dreaded athlete's foot which has been plaguing me for years.

“Let’s hit Crewe”, I suggested to @anidiotexplores with some enthusiasm. Crewe is a working-class northern industrial town famous for its massive train station, with tracks so loose you feel like your train is going derail whenever you pass it by.

20_IMG_7756_20.jpg

Surely there’s lots of old industry rotting away in that Staffordshire town?

In hindsight, Crewe was no Stoke-on-Trent and our visit was not nearly as successful as the previous years' double trip to the land of the Potters, but we didn't come away empty-handed.

23_IMG_7760_23.jpg

“That looks very suspect”, I piped up.

We had both spotted it while at some traffic lights, and this had to be investigated. The front looked very much sealed but we could see at least one suspect window from the front, a possible sign of abandonment.

24_IMG_7762_24.jpg

From the rear roadside, we were still a little unsure. The scraggly trees and bushes were disguising what could be a run-down property with some mad fucker inside intent on chasing us and screaming obscenities.

This is the life of an Urban Explorer on finding fresh places. We are abused and perceived to be there only for self-gain, and robbing to sell the spoils on eBay.

22_IMG_7759_22.jpg

Accessing ‘The Not-So Paranormal House' was a synch, climb over the weedy wall and you are on the grounds. Still, we were unsure and taking it easy at this point.

21_IMG_7758_21.jpg

A tentative walk around the back confirmed our suspicions and cemented this start in Crewe to 'fortunate'. Drive-pasts are rarely fruitful, and whatever was inside, we were going to see it.

7_IMG_7743_7.jpg

I guessed we were not the first unwelcome visitors, the back door had been smashed off its hinges, removed and all that was left was this flimsy wooden seal.

1_IMG_7737_1.jpg

Now you can see why it has been named so. Fucking paranormal idiots; it's an empty abandoned property, but that doesn't mean the local spooks move in right away for your benefit, complete with white sheets and coals for eyes.

2_IMG_7738_2.jpg

This was a simple cupboard for storing things away. It's all very normal besides the garish pink-red wallpaper, added in strips for a worse visual effect. There is some writing that I can't make out, possibly, 'Crap Wallpaper Company Inc.'.

3_IMG_7739_3.jpg

Now that's a very roomy kitchen despite the cheap dated units that look like they have been built by the previous owners and bought from Pound Land. The wall lights are a nice touch, as are the rose bushes that are trying to keep warm and moving inside.

4_IMG_7740_4.jpg

I did spray a little lavender air freshener to scent the room. Add the gale coming in from outside and it improves things for oh.., a couple of seconds.

5_IMG_7741_5.jpg

The local shit-heads have been having a good time here and 'The Not-So Paranormal House’ has been suffering.

6_IMG_7742_6.jpg

Some areas were back to the brickwork with no sign of plaster or plasterboard. It’s been in a sorry state for some time.

8_IMG_7744_8.jpg

It's the horrendous paint again. It does appear to have been wallpapered over, and due to dampness, the paper has dissolved revealing its true colours.

Is this why the Paranormal geeks have been attracted, they are associating it was some kind of 'devil-worship' congruent?

There are strange people out there, who like their walls painted red or pink or somewhere in between. It doesn't mean you are making a pact with the devil.

9_IMG_7745_9.jpg

Thick webs, but no spiders; they lay their traps and often starve to death due to lack of flies (food).

10_IMG_7746_10.jpg

I suppose the huge TV set used to sit at the far end, though it looks like there are secret cupboards behind. I am sure it's an illusion or I would have them opened and would have rifled through the contents.

11_IMG_7747_11.jpg

We ascended noting the ‘sticker’ attached to the banister. Don’t get me started on stupid stickers, they are little better than spray cans.

12_IMG_7748_12.jpg

Taking a shower in February when it’s still freezing with no towels and a sight like that is hardly appealing, and what is that black thing dangling? some type of sex toy for the shower?

13_IMG_7749_13.jpg

Poor things, I almost feel sorry for them, alone and unloved. It does appear there was at least one kid who lived here.

14_IMG_7750_14.jpg

…and this confirmed my suspicions.

15_IMG_7751_15.jpg

16_IMG_7752_16.jpg

That is quite neat handwriting possibly written by a teenager but with some scribbling. My hunch is it was a girl, as boys’ writing is usually more illegible.

17_IMG_7753_17.jpg

The previous rules don’t appear to be for ‘Scrabble’, but there were a few other remnants of board games kicking around.

18_IMG_7754_18.jpg

Patterns take me back to the last century when people created things and didn’t buy everything as manufactured items. It was quite intact and in decent condition.

19_IMG_7755_19.jpg

The staircase was in great condition shape, complete with granddad carpets. I wish I could say the same for the rest of 'The Not-So Paranormal House’.

We took our leave and ventured forth to the highlights of downtown Crewe.

So. Looks like it was 'abnormal' rather than paranormal. Or maybe normal for an abandoned place... Nice touch with the two vines through the kitchen windows.

Rumors of my death are greatly exaggerated. I'm not around much, but I do come around, and it's a real treat for me to see you in my feed. Thank you my friend.

Nice to see you @bigtom13, an original @steemengine writer.., there's few of us left! Hope you are doing OK in SW Yuma I think it is. Wish I had your heat, but don't miss the chilly AZ mornings.

carpet like that was all the rage back in the day. I cannot deny the fact that yes ours was too circa 1980's

"Not so normal"... But always a fantastic place to explore... And it even has lavender air freshener!... hahaha :))

By the way... WHAT a PHOTO!... I loved it!...

You have a soul for "author photography"... I know... Applause!

Thanks for sharing @slobberchops friend!...

Thanks, though you flatter me. I just see things and shoot. I do look at angles and try and size things up before mindlessly clicking though.

This looks like some of the houses in the UP of Michigan from the outside. That carpet on the stairs though, that just makes it for me!

The real seventies look, I see these a lot in the old houses, and it reminds me of when I was growing up and looking at the carpeted patterns in my parents house. Everyone had these.

I am sensing a great disturbance from beyond the veil!! Oh no, its the lavender air freshener :D

That hall wallpaper is haunting right enough!

LOL, the air freshener worked a treat, I did try it. No sell by dates on stuff like this, it just gets a little sweaty smelling 😀

Haha, not the intended original chemical fragrance!

Sad seeing those stuffed animals abandoned like that... It never ceases to amaze me how fast nature reclaims old buildings with the vines growing through the windows. Overall it wasn't in horrible shape.

I agree with you on the paranormal hunters, just because a place is abandoned doesn't make ghosts suddenly appear. I once bought a new house in New Mexico, I was the first owner and I would regularly hear footsteps down the hallway upstairs when no one was up there. Paranormal doesn't come from abandonment, it can there from day one. The developer probably built one top of an Native American graveyard...

Cool pictures and a fun adventure. Not sure I would want to ride the train through that area with loose tracks!

Living somewhere like that is a different story. I am not a non-believer but the ghost don't seem to be around when I am. I would like to experience something but to date, it has not happened.

The train always slow down when going through Crewe. The UK is not famous for it's decent rail system. It just has to rain and it all closes down.

I wasn't a believer in the paranormal either until I lived there!

Even graffiti is not what it used to be. Visit my Youtube channel. Very modern. 😄

It's defacing the property and going against what I believe in. This is why I hate stickers, all of these things mark the property and none of us should be doing anything like it.

Always enjoy your walk throughs. If my husband was in Hive he would love them. Although a physicist, he loves stories of the paranormal too and his favourite time of month is when the Fortean Times makes it's way to our mailbox here in Australia.

I'm not sure if I have asked you before but do you YouTube these forays?

We were watching one the other day exploring one of those ex industry towns - can't recall which one, over Sheffield way I think, if not Sheffield. The terrace houses were a mess. People would buy em super cheap, like for 30k, and flip em. Thing is if they didn't have a tenant super sharpish they'd just be ransacked immediately for the copper etc. They interviewed an old guy who had lived there since it's hey day and missed the life that used to thrum there. He was the only person living in an entire street.

That's totally insane when you watch other things on YouTube like how bad homelessness is getting in Brighton..

I'm not sure if I have asked you before but do you YouTube these forays?

I do occasionally, only to get figure out where the places are. They give them away quite often, like doing an intro in the street with a street sign behind them.

Sheffield is a place we have done several times. There's some coming up soon, including a Sex Dungeon which was interesting 😄

Well I guess it wasnt too bad for an unexpected drive-by find. Its odd how the stairs were good but the rest was trashed !

It was a great start to the day, but it didn't continue unfortunately. We had a lot of fails that day.

Great exploration. That looks like if it had been maintained it'd be a nice place.

It would need a lot of work, but is salvageable. If you can go upstairs and not be afraid the floor will collapse, then there's hope.

No cobwebs, no spiders, no ghosts what's up this end of town?

Manky to say the least, take an extra after breathing in dam ever....

!BEER never too late so enjoy!

Manky to say the least

That's a term I have not heard in a long time, it's quite unfashionable now and my daughter would be giving me strange looks. I will try it this Xmas, as she's due home in a few days.

So glad to give you a word to test drive on your daughter! 🙃

Oh, look at a Scrabble game... or what's left of it. Those stuffed animals made me a little sad, were they decapitated???? You really have to be brave to go into those creepy houses... but you are well armed with your lavender air freshener! ;) hahahaha... I died with this. I believe you do carry one with you, and this one reminded you that it was time to use it. 🤣

(edit)

for a moment I thought you had put an image as a head (to those stuffed animals), I don't know... could it be that the house has paranormal activity? 🤐

The animals were intact, it's the association with kids that gets me. The kids leave, the toy are left in cobwebs, dust and dirt.

I really like seeing these old houses. They give a glimpse of how people lived back then. This one seemed a bit recent since some of the furniture and things lying around look like they will fit in to today's standards. I'd like to think it was around the 80s.

I can never be sure unless there's letters hanging around. I try and find any correspondence but if it's very old there's generally nothing to be found.

Very cool, love finding abandoned buildings. Great post!

The real homes they used to build... What's paranormal nowadays is the average price of housing that forces people to share their living space with strangers even in their 30s...
Anyway, great piece of Urbex! Upvote deserved!

Awesome story as always! The title made me wonder if this then is a paraabnornal house 🙃

No ghosts in there, there never are!

...but not normal house if I continue the title. Keep us knocking off our expectations in 2024🎉

There's plenty more, but I need to start going out again soon, for the 2025 material!
