Splitting my concentration is something I have been unable to do well for the most part. Music comes into this majorly. For instance, I could be writing this article and have music playing in the background, could hear it but it would wash over me.
I wouldn't take it in and it sucks that I don't have this ability. Those people who have the split visual ability are even more gifted. They claim to be able to browse Facebook and watch some TV show simultaneously.
@bingbabe claims to be able to do this, but I am not sure I believe her. If I had music videos playing, I wouldn’t even hear them while writing as that demands even more concentration from my split mind.
What I can do is drive a car and become engrossed in the music, and at times enter a trance. I remember coming out of the other side and thinking, 'what the fuck happened?'
The car is still driving and I'm not in hospital. Maybe I do boast a limited split concentration after all?
Running with the Night – Lionel Ritchie (Can’t Slow Down – 1983)
Talk about mainstream. My late father was quite obsessed with 'Can't Slow Down' around 1984 and played it to death in his lounge at my parent's house. I have memories of coming down the stairs and this song being played a little loud with his speakers booming close to the end, where it tends to get bass-heavy.
What strikes me now is that he was listening to the music and doing little else. Was he also confined to a single concentrated mind stream just like me? When we were in the car, it was always the radio playing and never those pre-recorded cassettes you could buy.

...'thanks Steve, you improved this song no end, and in one go... quite remarkable'...
I don’t think he ever got around to ripping music off and placing his tunes on blank tapes like I did.
While this song may be mainstream, it was the ripping guitar solo close to the end that got my attention. Unknown to me at the time, that was performed in a single take by Steve Lukather of Toto who claimed the first iteration was just a ‘warm-up’. What talent that bloke has!
Lionel had heard 'Beat It' and Eddie Van Halen's contribution to the Michael Jackson hit and wanted his own rendition in one of his songs. I prefer this one. Sorry, Eddie.
I Got You – Split Enz (True Colours – 1980)
This one ‘got me’ after a single play, quite unusual even all those years ago. The clipped guitar ruff intro followed by the eerie backdrop caught my attention right away. The song was not a major hit in the UK, reaching just the top twenty but was critically applauded down under hitting the number one slot.
Not surprising as 'Split Enz' are a bunch of Kiwis and had been trying to make the big time since the early seventies.
If anything, the chorus lets this song down somewhat by easing up and stepping off the gas. I have found a few tunes like this, with a reverse attraction. Isn’t it supposed to be the chorus that drags you in?
Hypocrite – Lush (Split – 1994)
Do you know how hard it is to find another song containing the word ‘Split’? As this post is related to that topic I had to find something and eventually relented to using one of my favourite bands and a track from their excellent ‘Split’ album.
As this is NOT an Alternative Weekend post, I used probably the most accessible track on that album which is mostly stuck in their 'shoegaze' period, that is apart from 'Hypocrite' which was an example of their future vision.

...'Miki is no longer young, I wonder if she's still got the voice?'...
Selling out to 'Brit-Pop' was a wise idea in 1994 and this was just the beginning. Their next and final album, before the tragic suicide of drummer Chris Acland, was a deliberate change in style and gave them more success than anything before.
I have listened to 'Lovelife', and although it has its moments, I do consider it a sell-out. This band was unique in terms of sound, and in my mind excelled at the former genre.
Miki Berenyi still administers the 'Lush' Facebook page and personally responds to questions regularly. She also tours at small intimate venues, sometimes close to where I live. I have yet to go see her live. Without Emma Anderson, it would not be the same.

Steve Lukather has played on thousands of songs, including Beat It. He's obviously the go-to guy. Did you notice how many people are smoking in the video? You won't see that these days.
I know the Split Enz song, but didn't really follow them. Crowded House was some of the same guys.
I know Lush are more your thing.
This is from my favourite album called Split :) That was an accidental record library discovery as I liked the album cover.
I was just reading about this, he did most of it besides the shredding bit, I stand corrected.
It was painful to watch, cheesy as hell and too much noise over the music.., I am not a fan of that and these days that 'feature' seems to have gone away.
Goddang, you are right about that Spli Enz chorus. It's like it's been lifted from another song!
I do smile when I hear songs like the last one, that was kinda the sound that my band went for, overdriven dirty guitars with cock on top 😀😀 happy days!
The noisier Lush songs were much like this, a mass of noise and when I listen to them in the car, due to my crap hearing and tyre noise I struggle the hear much else! 😀
My hearing is getting a bit mince these days. When there is background noise I cant distinguish a thing!
Not just me then.
Lol, no. Eyes, ears, the delights just keep coming!
I've known people in the past who often fall asleep with the radio on. I've never been able to do that as I will sit and listen to all the songs and focus on them and stay up much later than I should. That being said, I usually have music playing in my office all day and it becomes more of a background thing that I don't actually know what is playing. I just know that I enjoy it. Nice selection of songs this week! I like your graphic too!
Music at work, it's been a long time since I have had that. In an open plan office there's no music, at least for the public. In Engineering workshops, it's a different case and then I could hear it. Perhaps it's due to me travelling through and not actually working in that environment.
Feel free to use the cover image, it's sits nicely with topic.
I think I would go mad without music. Even with the other ambient noise, I just need to have something playing in the background. Luckily @iikrypticsii wears airpods, so he doesn't need to listen to my music on the other side of the office!
Some of the developers wear pods, I find I struggle to concentrate with them on favouring even some screechy woman close by who's constant laughing can be annoying.
Wow, you are more focused than me!
Ahh Can't Slow Down, even Mr Mainstream himself didn't like Lionel Richie, especially Hello and its infamous video where he plays the part of a teacher who stalks his beautiful, blind student around the school!
Lush! New one for me and really good track, I'll have a scrounge about the net later, listening and reading!
6/10 from me this week ;-)
You and your family have a great Christmas. Best wishes :-)
Agreed, nauseating.., even then and I am not a Lionel fan, it's just this one song and that's all down to Steve's solo. The video is pure cheese, and embarrassing.
The BritPop stuff you might like, especially 'LoveLife'.., Ladykillers is OK but I prefer their Shoegaze stuff.
Nice pick for first song. I mean, who doesn't like Lionel Ritchie?! However, the real reason for dropping a comment is to compliment you on your choice of the Split Enz tune "I Got You" released back in January 1980. Wow, it's been entirely too long since I last heard that one! Thanks for the memories. Not familiar with Lush "Hypocrite."
Happy Tuesday! @slobberchops 🎶🎧✌
You are not the only one who mentioned the Split Enz song, I am surprised its remembered so well. Here it was not a big deal, and I only picked up on it a few years later.
Was best track in this #ttt selection for me too. 😜
Some fun picks, especially the Split Enz! I haven't heard that one in a long time! Lush must not have been a big hit in the US, I hadn't heard them before, but it's good! And old Lionel always does a great job. Great picks and a lot of fun!
Lush did tour those Lozaloopa gigs, in the nineties with some big bands such as the Chillies and Pearl Jam. The never did crack 'America' which is notoriously tough for British bands.
Plus I was living in South America and the Caribbean in the 90's... I really missed a lot of that! But if you want Hispanic music from the 90' I'm your man!
It's rare I listen to three songs in genres I like that I never heard that song before. I'm Mr Brit pop but never heard of Lush. This happened me with a band called Milburn with a song called Last Bus and I can't believe I never heard it before 2022. Il put it down to the who Britpop in Britain was much more niche than what we were getting with the 6 or 7 bands such as Cast , Ocean Colour Scene, Oasis , Blur and the line. Never heard the other 2 either. Jeez Louise. Good though.
Lush were a shoegaze band and migrated to Brit-Pop for their final work in 1996 or so. They were not popular like those others ones you mentioned, such as Oasis. I missed them first time around and was into my music in those times.
Never heard of Millburn, I did spin the song you mentioned.
I have heard of Lush but never really listened to them. Well, this song is quite catchy, I'll have to browse their discography a bit...
'Splitting the Atom' by Massive Attack comes to my mind 1stly, for this keyword.
Liked the 'Split Enz' track and video - it does have vibe.
I don't know that one, but watched the video and felt sorry for the bull. I saw a live bullfight when I was a teenager, it took me back.
I too am bad at multitasking. I can't do the things you mentioned properly, like listening to music while writing [I tried it while listening to your songs and writing this comment], or watching videos and scrolling through FB. I can do the driving while listening to music, but I find it difficult to hold a conversation while driving. When I am doing something, my full attention tends to be taken up by it.
Thank you for sharing these music. I don't like a lot of the new music that is coming out, and there are tons of older music to go through. Seeing people's recommendations help me find good music faster.
This is a good presentation man. I love the engagement with your writing, it appears very captivating. And then your music taste is something else bravo man
These songs are really nice. They are not the genre I listen to but they are very cool
I love them!
Wonderful
