Music Monday: Sound Healing, Black Peak, The Good The Dub and the Global, and Nomadic Revelry πŸ’– FEEL WELCOME TO DROP YOUR OWN TUNES IN THE COMMENTS πŸ’–

Yesterday I went to something called a 'sound healing'. The premise is that sound affects you on a cellular level, energising and healing you. The musicians walk around the room, playing guitar and singing, and chiming on gongs and bells and so on. Imagine deep drums for base chakra, gongs and bells for the higher chakras. Sound is energy, energy is sound.

I've been to a few of these things and generally fall asleep. It's lovely and relaxing, but I can't say I've been spiritually charged or moved by them - perhaps because I've been moved so much by music in my life and felt so much incredible energy from it that it's going to be a big effort on behalf on any musician to 'heal' me with sound in one Sunday afternoon. Perhaps I'm a little cynical - perhaps I struggle to open up to people who profess to have these powers. We sung some mantras to begin with - a Green Tara Tibetan chant and a Sufi one, and we ommed and hummed it was lovely, being carried away with waves of sound.

Still, I didn't feel moved enough to share the music of that experience - it just wasn't my jam. He was talented enough but it didn't thrum in my heart the way it did for others.

Here I am writing on Sunday night trying to think of musical moments that DID move me - and instead, I'm just enjoying the silence of the early evening and the music of the birds settling down for the night... thus...

....the passing of time, a night of willy wagtails tweeting mischievously - do they ever sleep?

.... and then awaking on Music Monday, going with the first song that pops in my head, as they often do on waking.

Firstly, Xylouris White - this is Jim White from The Dirty Three (who plays drums like NO-ONE I have ever seen play drums - the guy is an ARTIST!) and George Xylouris who plays the Cretan lute and is a bit of a legend in that regard! When we saw them live in Melbourne last year, they started with the craziest loudest drums that whacked me in chest so hard it made me grin like crazy. I took my parents and Dad turned and looked at me with utter joy on his face. Yep, we were moved - the music thrummed through us and for a moment, there was God. This might not be to everyone's taste and I'm including it for @perceptualflaws, my Music Monday buddy, who I thought might dig it (mate, loud please!)

Being a big fan of fusion/world/dub music, I have to advise at this point an awesome radio show called 'The Good, The Dub and the Global' on 102.7 RRR Melbourne Radio. I love what Sister BB plays and you might like to listen again if that's your thing. You can find the show here - I bloody love it. This advice is in place of Tune number 2 - I'm actually letting Xylouris White roll on on Youtube and lost in that atmosphere I'm reluctant to go tune hunting for the second tune! Forgive me!

On an another totally unrelated note, I've been listening to Will Oldham again this week - used to listen to him a lot years ago, and Joya is one of my all time favourite albums. He's kinda freak folk/alternative country and I've loved him since I started listening to him mid 1990's.

I just love the sexiest of these lyrics:

Oh all around a left buttock
And all around a right
All around your every curve
I'm going to go tonight
But only hold me, hold me
All the city's on me
And all they wish to scold me
And lay their hands upon me
So only hold me, hold me
And I'll return't you baby
I just need an evening
With someone nice to hide me

What tunes are you listening to this week?

Please feel free to drop a youtube link below - it's all about sharing music baby! If you have been following these posts you'll know that my taste is super varied and eclectic, and I really love listening to lots of music (apart from metal - sorry @karinxxl) and LOVE it when you drop a tune for me so my Monday gets super musical! I'll upvote what I can depending on my voting power xx

Hey my friend, thank you for the recommendation .. I thought it was awesome and those drums .. wow they're relentless! A very tribal sound, which I love. As you may remember I'm certainly with you on the healing power of sound/vibration .. indeed at our core that is what we are, we are the music! :D Love your second choice as well .. really emotive sound and inventive (and dare I say brave lol) lyrics .. what is not to love! .. excellent choices as always @riverflows This week I'm going to go for a spot of rock from All Them Witches and the brilliant "Open Passageways" .. see what you think!

Cool - a Witchy song! I wish I'd seen this earlier today, as I would have played it in the radio show this morning - Love it, and a awesome clip too. Love the lyrics.... it's pretty much how I will feel in vipassana next week - wanting to BELLOW - having to be equanimous instead... eeek.... great song, love this one! Thanks so much!

I've been listening to folk compilations the last few days.. They are pleasant to go to sleep too, and I've noticed that the cat likes them more than metal, so... ya know. Doing something nice for teh furbaby...

Here's some of my music. I hope you like it. Music can be very healing. The soundscapes convey the nonverbal reality that surrounds inner and outer space. Cool post :)

@riverflows
Cool, this is what Im listening to.
Detroit Techno - Edmond Binoge @ Club Ice (06.03.2015)

Bloody great. You don't know quite how much we love Detroit techno around here - hubby has a lot of it on vinyl because he used to really really love it in his DJ days - played a lot of it. A lot! He's more an expert on it than I am but the whole Detroit sound was (is) awesome. I really love all the ruined buildings in Detroit too and it has such a cool history - that, and the urban ag movement. Have you ever seen the doco 'Requiem for Detroit'? Thanks for sharing!!! Awesome tune. xx

No never seen the documentary, but I had some friends who has been there DJing, and they have been reporting back... I will check it out the film, I feel so old when I can't find time to go out dancing all night anymore.

I was quite into it as a "kid", but more into dancing that feeling of freedom and the urban decay, then being a DJ and knowing every label and artist and such...

Yeah right, totally get that. I couldn't imagine going to a club these days, I'm done! xx J. went and saw Orbital last night though in Bristol, I was well jealous...

@riverflows
You can always do it, Im also getting older unfortunately, but Im going to try and go out and pull an all-nighter in some crazy club or festival every year, until I die... Orbital cool, thats old-school stuff real rave music...

Love them so much. I got the phonecall on the way to the beach as they were playing DOCTOR? and got the light show and all xx

Nice @riverflows, it was most probably a good concert.
Im so bloody tired now days, or Im hyper, there seems to be no middle ground... It would be fun to go out dancing and stabilize everything...
Peace!
