Yesterday I drove a bit down the road to do my daily shopping in another village.
They (whoever they are) say a change is as good as a holiday, you know. 😉
I was super excited to be able to hop into the car and travel again!
Once-upon-a-life-ago I'd often do this on a Sunday and make a whole day of it. Cape Town has pretty much every kind of landscape you'd wanna spend some outdoorsy time in and you can drive around the entire Peninsula in less than a day and experience all of it.
From forests and forest streams, to mountains, to beaches and oceans, to farms and vineyards. It's really all within a short drive if you know the path well.
And so I'd pack a little backpack:
1 x Sarong (can be both worn and used as a towel)
1 x jersey and a pair of leggings (I'd often stay out past sunset to see the magnificence and, sometimes, went straight on to party if the outing was on a Saturday instead of a #SlowSunday)
1 x Litre Bottle of water
A few apples to snack on (simplicity was a part of the experience)
A bit of cash for snacks (always from farm-stalls or interesting cafes along the way because adventure is out there)
And a book. Of course!
This was one of my greatest pleasures, and the sense of freedom it afforded me, that I've really, really missed over these last years of going it on foot in the Western Cape.
There's slim to no public transport on weekends around here, you see.
I've been meaning to spend more time in Rooi-Els for a while now.
So I decided to use the initiative to move again, gifted to me by recent events, to get there and see the place a bit more.
I must add, here, that every time "Life" has thrown a curve ball in my direction, during the events over these last years, that it was by taking "right action" (instead of avoiding things) that I levelled up and made some genuine progress.
What began as circumstances beyond my control that were so out of alignment with my principles that they spurred me into stepping up even though I was terrified at times...
has become a habit for me now.
No. Wait. That's not entirely correct...
has become both "A Way of Life and The Only Right Way Forward" for me now.
And, sometimes (usually) when I've been struggling along for a while but haven't changed direction...
"Life" has kicked my butt hard enough for me to finally shift.
These days a nudge is enough. Perhaps when you can't afford to lose much more it's easier to stay awake for longer. Or for good. I hope.
You and I are gonna be traveling to other places together as soon as humanly possible. And I'm busy trying to find a new place to live for the next while. Also as soon as humanly possible.
No time to explain.
Get in the back of the Van!
Honestly though... I don't want my son coming back to this in two weeks, so am looking seriously to move on asap. I shall madly miss my landlady, who is another Pippin for sure and, who I adore and may try to take with me.
But wtaf is a "Pippin" you may ask. Well, strangely enough, that's exactly how I've decided to begin the next book. To follow on Hive asap as well.
I'm not "running away".
There's a difference between running away from yourself (we call this "doing a geographical" in recovery and yes, I've done it - for some years actually. The endless summer, anyone? 😆) and a difference between knowing when and how to take "right action".
And what "right action" may even be in a situation.
The first thing most folks want to do when something challenging arises is either "Fight" or "Flee". But this is an instinctual reaction and I've personally found it's best to wait a bit until it abates.
There is also some "right action" that may do you more harm than good in certain situations. Or in the world as it is today. If you're still naive enough to believe that the truth and justice prevail in 2023. #freejulianassange
I guess what I'm trying to share is that one must factor in a lot of what isn't "right action" to make sound choices on when and how to take action.
And here's the kicker...
if you don't take "right action" you're going to suffer the consequences in one way or another.
Even if you think a situation has nothing to do with you at all.
But this may only be more understandable when I figure out how to write that part of the next book for you. Stories illustrate things best, I reckon.
Working title: "The Perfect Practice" or "The Perfect Experience".
TBD
And, right now, I'm busy trying to find the stability and peace to do it. Again and still🙄
Kinda like most of humanity, really. Only most folks are too busy trying to survive to "see" this part fully. Yet. I hope one day we realise that, by working together, we may actually beat the dysfunctional and corrupt systems that are holding us captive. And that we will naturally thrive more, as individuals, as an outcome of this.
But, until then, I remove myself from situations that won't allow me to (or, in an ideal world, actively support me to) thrive, these days. And I walk away as quickly as I can. Life is challenging enough, thanks.
"They" say a change is as good as a holiday anyway. So here's some of Rooi-Els and the guy at the local store was groovy, cool and had lekker tattoos.
And my car was safe so I'll be doing my shopping in Rooi-Els, in Betty's Bay or in Kleinmond moving forward.
Problem solved.
So... I stumbled upon something (at last) on my wonderings and wanderings through Rooi-Els.
I've seen this something, from Clarens Drive, on the coastal drive into the Overberg via Gordon's Bay.
This breathtaking coastal road is now closed due to damage from the storm and it looks like it will be for a while still.
The only road into Rooi-Els is via Kleinmond at the moment.
This is impacting trade for local businesses, sadly. I do hope people take the time to travel, the only eight (according to Googley-Google) extra minutes, and visit the beautiful village of Rooi-Els to show some love and support.
Rooi-Else is a bit more "larney" than Pringle Bay.
I saw the homes, as I drove into the Overberg all those months ago, and commented to the driver that Rooi-Els is where the rich folks must have their holiday homes in the Overberg.
But Rooi-Els is also still casual and earthy.
Nobody batted an eyelid as I walked around barefoot. Of course
And the beaches are empty and spectacular! 💥
But what was the "something" I stumbled upon, after months of curiosity?
Well, of course Iron Man would have a holiday home out here on the coast!
I knew it was the same place I'd seen across the bay, from the miles away incoming mountain road, as soon as I saw the back gates.
So, being a curious George and, having wondered about this specific property for almost a year now...
I had to grab the opportunity to have a closer look.
With "Life" being as it is...
I may not have another chance.
Around the side to have a look at the architecture up close...
but you had me at the courtyard statue. 👍
Beautiful vision. Whoever created this.
And on we go. 👣 💜

Happy Monday and love from Africa!
You're welcome @nickydee! Have a nice day 😊👍
That was a beautifully written (as always) travelogue. Sadly, the first thing my mind sprang to was the 'Ingco' sticker in the Rooiels shop. I'd never of this brand of tools until it recently popped up all over Thailand. I guess they have employed an amazing global brand marketing team!
I think 'vanlife' would suit you if you had no kids. It really allows the spirit and soul to wander to their heart's desire.
Stay well and enjoy the freedom of the infernal combustion engine :-)
D'you mean the small town gossip or the super cool car? :D
I didn't actually notice the Ingco thing. Really? How interesting! Well done to them and it's a small world after all.
Yeah... I would've been a sterling van-lifer. Perhaps getting a bit old now. Maybe a motor home and not in SA. It's a bit cray cray here now for that kinda thing. I'll stick to the main drags in the Datsun. The guys here love it and had more than one conversation about it with interested strangers as I went about my day and two requests to sell it :) It is gorgeous. If you know more about the history here.
And thank you. It was a great day out! Defs gonna be doing more of that!
Still hoping that one day I can surprise you and the mother in law unexpectedly though 😈
Stay cool, N.
Love from the South-ish somewhere to the left on the map.
Oh, I do love that word BEWAREA!!!
And now I'm totally lost!
Which word?! :D
Don't answer until you've taken time to find some joy and wonder again, please.

I meant to write more last night but I was pooped. And peakd crashed and I'm using ecency and totally lost and confused but joy still exists, it's just on hold until the moon does her thing ... lol
This inspires me to try doing some grocery shopping in another neighborhood, just for a change. Just for fun.
Do it :)
I'm going to try Betty's Bay tomorrow 👍
And maybe finally see some Penguins! 💥
YEAHHHH!!! PENGUINS!!!!
The Penguins did not transpire.
I got lost again and gave up. For today :D
It's hot out there already and I could not find the beach out there. I also have more laundry to do, so couldn't hang around.
Perhaps another day! ❤️
I'm so glad I found this post to read today, Monday, right after spending a weekend indoors, not seeing the sun, working on the computer. The idea of going off around the world in a van after I retire makes me fall in love.
I love your narrative, the photos, the song you chose... But most of all, this touched my heart:
I have a book written in my head about this subject; I can sum it up--deficiently--by telling you that I wish bad people didn't exist, so that we wouldn't have had to make the world a prison, which in the end, imprisons and enslaves those who love more than those who hate. I'm convinced that only the wrong people make it to the highest positions of power, my friend. Good people just can't stomach all the horrible stuff that goes with it. I know I sound pessimistic. But if you see it as I do, we can rejoice that there are people who are not willing to sacrifice their souls.
Have a great week. Hope you find a nice place to move and that you can keep all the happiness you need!
Oh hello, fellow traveler and meet @corvidae up there.
We've just been trying to manage the sinking feeling from the utter chaos unfolding in the world right now.
Please see the above comment!
And yes. The shit heads are running the show and it's why they end up at the top. As you said. But... see here? We more gentle humans are coming out of the woodwork and finding each other. Strength in unity. That's what it takes, perhaps. And yes. We are going to have to learn how to fight this insanity.
And eventually, even better, how to not let them get into those positions in the first place ;)
What work do you do, if you don't mind me asking. Actually don't. I suspect you need some rest as well so I'm coming to find you in the morning to find out more about you. Edited because now I must know! - do you chef?
One thing you can be sure of is that you're most certainly not alone <3
This part made me laugh, hehe. I used to work alone as a professor at the local university in my state, but for the last twelve or thirteen years, I've also been working as a cosmiatric dermatology assistant--my sister is my boss there--. Cooking is a hobby, and Hive makes it a few dollars better, as well as making it more motivating in general.
I have done many jobs in my life, but the plan was just to be a teacher; that changed when the economy collapsed in Venezuela and teachers became a annoying liability for the Government. I never had the strength to quit the university even though my salary there was enough to pay for a dozen eggs and a loaf of bread once a month--now it's like 80 dollars a month--, all benefits lost (no health insurance). Sometimes I spend more money on coffee and sandwiches for my students than what I get for my job. I don't resent it; I'm just showing you the facts. Anyway, I should be retired by 2028, hehe. Whew!
...I studied another career back in 2009 and became a cosmiatric assistant; that's what pays the bills. I have my practice inside my sister's office, who is a dermatologist and my supervising doctor. So Monday through Thursday I'm in my hometown working as a teacher and on the weekend, I'm in the neighboring state working my second job. In short, yes, I need a break.
But don't get me wrong. Most people who live a decent life over here work two jobs or more. I'm not a special case.
The word bewarea also caught my attention, btw, hehe. I need to create a equivalent word in Spanish, but it's going to take me a while.
Sorry for the long reply. It'd be shorter if you had asked me what's the meaning of life 😂 I would've said: "I'm not sure, but we must make sure it means something dear for all."
I think you nailed it 👍
And also. Live it! Because it has some incredible moments and we shouldn't waste the experience.
Ah... same out here in ZA. Most people work a few jobs. I think this is the state of the world now for we "normal" folk. Sadly :|
And usually both parents out here as well. :(
I still don't understand why teachers get such shite pay. Arguably the most important position / job on the planet. Just weird. And it sounds as though your kids are lucky to have you. I had a good teacher who, literally, changed my life. We are still friends to this day.
Have you seen the new cake and confectionary artists that are taking the world by storm? 👀
I'm mildly obsessed with this now and would like to learn this art as well.
The quickest way to domination. Freethought is dangerous for tyrants.
It amuses and obsesses me a little, too. I wish I could learn all these things. In general, I like to learn almost everything about cooking, as far as my time and attention allow me to.
How I'd love to stumble upon your amazing creations here on Hive in a few months and say, wow, she actually did it, hehe.
WOW. Okay. There you go *salutes
And so you shall :D
These days, I "just do it!" (Nike)
Life's too short not to, you know.
I am so glad we found each other!! 💥😀

Lovely post as always...
Would love to read your book but I feel I'll sleep to it😭😭 No offense but I'm more of an adventure action reader😭
Rooi Els seems like a lovely place to visit too...
Just go in the morning and sleep on the sands ..
Vacation ✨
None taken. I love honesty the mostest of all! ❤️👍
It is lovely. I'll be visiting new places instead now. It's been a good huddle and a good rest but it's time to move and shake again. It keeps the energy and creativity flowing

Epic post. You're attracting the biggest whales and their upvotes. I used to get similar payouts years ago. I'm not as good with detail as you though.

Hey, good to see you writing again. Looks like a great trip, but Cape Town? I never knew you’re in South Africa!
Great action whenever life throws a curveball at you seems like a key to everything. I thought going away to see my friend for a few days should be that good action, but I came back sick and spiralling down a little again 🙈
I did let go of a few healthy habits while being away though… no breakfasts as I was sick and a few sneaky coffees which I haven’t had for months.
Deciding what the appropriate action is can be tough at times, but deep inside we know.
Good luck finding that next place to live and with your next book too 💙
Such amazing views 🤩

Oh :(
Sorry to hear that. I reckon life is a balancing act. It'd be nice to have less stormy conditions to balance things a bit better for sure!
But we do our best!
I'm tired! :D And tired of being tired! Perhaps it's all the coffee 😈 But I think just extended stress. It's gone on a bit. Yeah.
Big immune boost! Fuck tons of vitamin C, garlic, turmeric and you know. 👍🏼 I've been much better at nutrition after the lastt bottom out. Old I guess. It's hard to bounce back so maintenance rather :|
Yeah. I'm pretty excited about the book. Been working madly here to get the project ready. :D It's coming together at last. Almost maybe ready.
I hope you take rest, eat well and sleep as much as you can.
And don't forget to dance ❤️
