Stories In The Wall of Hong Kong By Filipino Artists

Not all stories are written in books, some are painted on walls. I couldn't agree more. Some stories are made in a form of art just like graffiti and murals. They are the best tools for storytelling on a grand scale in public spaces. The harborfront in Central Hong Kong is one of the places to see art murals. I spotted a few, but each mural conveys thought-provoking stories for everyone to see and engage with.

Surprisingly, some of the murals were made by Filipino artists. Knowing that makes me happy, as it could be something to be proud of for Filipinos.

The mural, named Bagong Araw, or A New Day in English translation, is inspired by Filipino resilience. It shows that we should embrace all challenges while allowing opportunities to arise every day. Opportunities to grow through challenges and opportunities to share memories with people in our unique way. The artist, by the way, is a Filipina Art Teacher in Hong Kong. You can check Nicole Roquel for her other artworks usually inspired by Filipino tradition, culture, and her childhood memories.

Another mural from a Filipina artist, Reana Bachiller I will call it Bubbles because it shows the scene of a baby blowing out bubbles. The artist wants to convey to the public the importance of savoring every moment, especially the happy ones. It may, as well include taking every good opportunity, because we don't know what will happen next. One moment they are in front of us, the next moment they are gone like bubbles. This truly makes sense.

Aside from murals made by some Filipino artists, there are some on this wall made by Chinese artists.

We have an adage saying, "A friend in need is a friend indeed." I guess it is portrayed in the mural with the word Lover. The artist showed how his friends helped him get through tough days. The mural shows different people with different characters and expressions. They may look like bullies in the beginning, but those are different characters of the artists' friends. They laughed for him, cried for him, and helped him recover. This mural shows that at the end of the day, our real friends can help us get through dark and tough days, and there's nothing wrong with seeking help from others when things seem unbearable to carry alone.

Meanwhile the mural Gate of Goodness and Carnival by different Chinese artists shows thought-provoking scenes for people's own imagination and interpretation.
