A visit to Cornwall, pre Winter Solstice celebrations, to visit some friends and take in the seasonal festivities.
Padstow is an ancient coastal town in Cornwall UK, it is recorded in the Domesday Book, of 1086. At that time it consisted of 24 acres of land, housing five feudal tenants and six small holders, who between them owned two ploughs!
It became a busy fishing port and the town prospered through trade, ships plying their trade between Ireland and the local ports of both England and Wales along the Bristol Channel
As time moved on Padstow grew and became a port involved in import and export, mainly of Cornish tin, copper and lead, as well as the importing of timber from Scandinavia, wine from France, iron and jute from Russia.
During the 19th century it was a significant port of embarcation for emigrants, particular those bound for Canada and the US.
What tales these compact streets and tangled narrow alleyways around the harbour could tell, A harbour and haven for pirates and smugglers. With punitive taxes ever increasing, to fund the imperialist expansion of the English it is little wonder that places like Padstow thrived in illicit goods. Landed in places like Pepper Cove, Hell’s Mouth and Ralph’s Cupboard.
What was a quaint traditional fishing port, is now a gentrified haven, most of the properties are either second homes or rentals for tourists. With prices, for example a 3 bed 1 bath terraced house just off the harbour for sale at just under £1.5 million what chance to the locals have of buying a home?
Rick Stein, a humble cook? nah with an empire and a bank balance of over £35 million, homes in Australia, London and....yes Padstow, owning numerous properties and businesses in the town, Padstein seems quite an apt nickname.
Having looked at the style over substance over priced lunchtime menu at the above cafe, ( £20 for a small lunchtime curry anyone). Fuck that! was the phrase of choice.....
...and ended up here, it seemed more natural and less pretentious
....not sure if the menu appealed here either
Ah! that's better, ham egg and chips positevely comfort food, a bonus was the chips were not deep fried frozen things but proper hand cut ones. A pint of Rattler, please barman, I shall pass on the bottom sniffer.
Just a couple of the many local artisanal distilleries that have popped up due to Padstein being " a place for foodies". I think I shall start a petition to get a Macadees.
The building of Alms houses goes back to the 11th Century, these were constructed in 1875.
8 properties remain under charitable control and are specific for housing poor people aged 50+, who are also existing Padstow parish residents only
All you could ever wish for merry bloody christmas everyone.
Padstow, to be frank, lacks the authenticity of a fishing town such as Newlyn or the charm of Mevagissey and to be honest the place seemed to be full of snobs and dogs, plenty of bottom sniffing going on and the dogs were misbehaving too.
"Oh look at me Dahling, lunch at Rick Stein's, then pop into his souvenir craft shop, must get a bag with his name on to look above average when I get back to civilisation (anywhere north of the Tamar)"
Padstein in all its greedy glory wants your spondoolies; you must give it - in return you get a lovely paper bag with whatever tat you have just brought from there contained within, and do not expect to get seaside rock, that is just too down market.

Many quaint towns now owned by the rich, lost the true British people and feel.
Older middle class find their way to Clacton-on-Sea where I believe you find the true Brit, buy a pint at affordable rates with no hoity-toity fuss of the pretentious wanna be's...
Can never take the charm or old world feel away from district. Sadly no longer has the appeal to the likes of many searching experience in true tradition!

margate is another and southend. I guess Cornwall as a county is one of the most beautiful places in England, and attracts all sorts even that cretin of a former prime minister cameron takes his holidays there.
Gentle beauty down south, what used to be fishing towns now owned by the rich. Go to look not to stay!
exactly
🤣 yup way out of our league!
tbh I am happy where I am in my own skin
Best way to be, pretentiousness is a disease.
Your perspective on Padstow's transformation and the contrast between traditional charm and modern gentrification is quite insightful. Each town has its unique character, and it seems like you found comfort in the more authentic spots. Your experience with the lunch menus and the local atmosphere adds a personal touch to the narrative. Thanks for sharing your journey and observations!
cheers @silviared945 glad you enjoyed walking with me.
So many places are spoiled with that… it’s a shame.
Still great captures and walk through.

Terrible prices. I've just had an amazing dinner for less than 2$ in Bangkok.
I will support your skeptical tone and say: the architecture looks pretty but there is not much (authentic) life on these streets.
There are such towns and cities that resemble a dead snail. The snail died long ago, but the shell remained, and souvenir shops and hotels were opened in it. That shell doesn't walk, doesn't eat, doesn't breath, but it looks pretty so entrepreneurs make money from this.
Modern tourism is significantly based on this: temples crowded not with praying people but Instagrammers, etc.
Thanks for the post. Never been to England. A legendary country in every aspect.
cheers @x-rain hit the nail on the head I like the comparison to a snail sums it up perfectly!
DO NOT get me started on fucking instagrammers, every where you go cluttering up the place stupid pouting and posing for fucking ever. Personally I can see a shot before I raise the camera, 2 seconds bang move on. Yet these fuckwits jesus christ.......; you know what I am saying! I have now got into the habit of standing in their pictures sometimes it works and they move on.
😁😁
I sometimes take images of them - between sessions of posing, they can be sincere and cool. How strange these people choose the worst moments (moments of pouting and posing) to shoot.
yes indeed!!!
That's a very interesting take on Padstow, and yeah, whenever one mentions Padstow I always think of Rick Stein, like they're tied at the hips.
That said, I've ever been before even though it's relatively near my part of the world.
Just a hop skip and a jump down the M5/A30 !! Yes he has taken over and another cheffie type tv personality is moving in too, Paul Ainsworth, never heard of him!
Stop by when you're on the M5 next time!
I shall do that !
Nice pictures and great village. I like Padstow a lot according to your pictures, it made me remember to Greenwich, although I know they are not close geographically.
Anyway it doesn’t seem to be the best place to visit, since it’s like those typical places with the name and the fame to be great, but they let you down when you finally arrive there. It’s not nice when the destination creates great expectations and then is not able to fulfill them.
hi @belug , yes the thoughts of a small village on the sea conjures up thoughts that when you get there do not match, still one has to just accept that there is still beauty in the old buildings. I have never been to Greenwich, to be honest it must be 25 years since I visited London, I must go sometime.
The streets and alleyscouldtell a tale indeed- a taleofchanges and "gentrification" an dlost authenthicity. Pity. I like the dog's menu but wonder whether one of the many dogs there would like it. The outdoor vendors did not lose their sense of humour and are aware of their customers - there is even gluten-free hottiies.
Nice photos as always - I remember those days of making calls in red phone booths.
I have never seen a doggy menu anywhere else before, guess it is now all part of the culture of Padstein.
lol
You are right, my friend @grindle. Sometimes there are places where the prices are inflated and probably leaves an unpleasant aftertaste after the visit... However, I really liked some photos of authentic houses with sharp roofs and blue shutters 🙂
Thank you @olga.maslievich , lovely architecture for sure
