I am selectively stingy with certain things in my life

in ASEAN HIVE COMMUNITYlast year

There have been times in my life that my friends have gotten on my case about being stingy because of certain things that I will not spend money on. I do not like going to fancy brand-new restaurants that I consider to be overpriced. I do not pay for premium products generally speaking and I even shy away from bars that have a great view but charge what I consider to be overpriced prices on their beverages.

I am not stingy. I just don't like paying what I consider to be "too much" for things. I try to explain to my friends that are calling me stingy that this is a big part of the reason why I am financially stable. It is kind of amusing to me that the people who are criticizing me or calling me stingy are also friends of mine who have almost no savings yet they are sitting across the table from me with the latest $1400 I-Phone.

This is the first thing I am stingy about: Phones.

Let's start with my phone. When I broke my Huawei phone by dropping it multiple times and by getting it wet once, I needed to get another phone. It was actually kind of a relief not having a phone for a few days and my lack of sense of urgency in getting another phone was alarming to my friends. When I did finally go to the store to get a new phone I started at the cheap end of the rack and moved my way to the left. By the time I found the phones that were in my price range I was right next to the flip phones that I can't believe they still manufacture. If it wasn't for 2FA, I would probably just get a flip phone to be honest with you.

I'm going to be straight up here. The Galaxy A03 is a piece of shit. You can't really do anything on it and when you do try to do something that a lot of people do with their phones like take photos, it takes a long time to load and the pictures are always going to be crap. This is the reason why almost all of my bowling photos look out of focus. It is not an advanced piece of machinery and it wouldn't surprise me if it has been phased out already. My friends pick on me for my crap phone but it cost $100. I wasn't expecting a lot from it. Basically, I told the guy at the shop that I will buy ANY phone in a particular price category that was not manufactured by Apple and was capable of handling 2 simcards. The fact that I ended up with an A03 is simply because it was the first one we tried that was able to check both of these boxes. I have zero brand loyalty and probably only spend 15 minutes a day on my phone each day. This is mostly to look at memes while I am in the gym.

We can probably see how terrible the camera is in my next two examples of where I am selectively stingy.

You can kind of see Nadi in the background there because any time I put something on the table she presumes it is food.

Anyway, that is my latest mobile gaming rig. It is a Nintendo 3DS and I think I paid $150 for it including 2 or 3 games. This was many years ago and was purchased exclusively because of the fact that I was about to go on a very long-haul flight. I had intended to get a Nintendo Switch but those, at the time anyway, were $500 if you wanted it bundled with the Breath of the Wild Zelda game. I was in a Game Stop (do those still exist) and mulling over the fact that $500 seemed like a lot of money to spend on just one game for one trip. I don't think the flight was that much.

Right next to it was a 3DS and I guess they were discounting these because they were phasing them out in lieu of the Switch. For far less money I could get the console and 3 games. It turns out that I made the correct decision because I absolutely loved the Zelda and Metroid game that came bundled with it. The battery life on it is also exceptional.

I am not an avid gamer anymore and another thing that I enjoyed about this decision was that years later I would get a chance to play Breath of the Wild and I really didn't enjoy it. Thank goodness the prudence took over that day in the GameStop because I would have been pissed at myself if I had dropped $500 on something and didn't even like what I was playing in the end.

next up is a prime example of my selective stinginess

is that something to eat?

These are my $4 reading glasses. I use them, as the name would suggest, to read. I also use them when I spend hours a day staring at monitors. I don't really use them for anything else.

About a week ago one of the arms popped off and I have simply not bothered to get another pair because they still stay where they are supposed to on my face when I am sitting and reading or looking at monitors. I don't see the point in getting a new pair if they are still doing their job. I almost never wear my glasses outside of the house and when I do I am with my friends who will make a joke out of it but everyone has fun because of it. It's a win/win.

Trust me, I have a spare $4 lying around.

To nail the point home about how I am selectively stingy I want you to refer to my recent posts about how I am still planning to get hair transplants. This is a cosmetic and elective surgery that is actually extremely expensive. I feel as though there is a very real difference between "expensive" and "overpriced." The surgery is going to cost at a minimum 110 million VND, which is over $4000. If i want it done extremely well, it is going to cost in excess of $5000. This will end up being more money than I have ever spent on anything in one day in my life but to me, it is worth it.

It is not overpriced because it involves extremely skilled individuals using very expensive equipment to perform a process that has been decades in the making. Therefore I think it is worth it and I will pay the price.

I am not cheap, I just feel as though I am sensible with my money because like most middle-class people, I have limited funds but would like to not have to worry about how I am going to pay my rent this month.

Are there things in your life that you are selectively stingy about?

Sort:

You are starting to scare me as I see this in myself lol , but I do see it as a good thing. Phones are phones and as long as I can make a call and use the 2FA to log into various sites that is all I need. I bought a shitty car because I knew it would not be stolen and hijack material. The only item I will splurge on will be a laptop which I will get once the bull cycle is over as I need a new one. Nothing wrong with what I have except I am now about to order the 3rd keyboard replacement. I never expected to be on Hive and all the typing as this is not a normal comfort zone even though I am comfortable now. If you purchase quality items that you use and need then I see no problem as they should last longer, but certain items don't need to be top of the range or the latest and flashiest. I tried to get a screen protector the last time I was in the UK for my phone only to be told they discontinued that as my phone is over 10 years old. This does not worry me as I was happy with what I had and it did what was required. people waste so much money today because it is fashionable and trendy which is seriously wrong.

That's awesome and I can understand the shitty car scenario in your situation. Phones probably would have been important to me when I was younger but for the most part the things that i see the fancy phones do that mine cannot are stupid crap that I would never do anyway like shoot TikTok videos in high definition.

Phone have gotten out of control as far as how expensive they are. Why would I have a $300 laptop and a $1500 phone. It a no a make a sense!

You are not cheap. You are just living within your means! It is a foreign concept for most folks, who all seem to coincidentally as middle class. What a stupid concept.

As for things I don’t mind paying a premium for, phones are one of them because so much of my livelihood is associated with it. Along the lines of things I use over 4 hours per day, eyeglasses are worth a premium in my mind. Gimping one of my most important senses with cheap lenses just doesn’t add up. Plus, I am not style obsessed by any stretch of the imagination but glasses are front and center with every interaction I have, whether business or social. Knowing I will use a pair for years makes me feel alright spoiling myself a little.

You probably may know but you were highlighted by asean hive for good reason. Here’s to you old friend.

Thanks buddy. As my eyesight worsens I am realizing that I am going to have to shell out some cash for some quality bifocals but without the line. These are guaranteed to be expensive but like you said, there are some things you need to have quality versions of.

The only reason I get the latest and greatest phone is because my work pays for it. I definitely wouldn't be spending that kind of money if I had to buy it myself. Then again, it is going to make it hard for me when I retire to go back to phones that are three or four models behind. Plus, I'm not sure they even allow you to do that anymore. I was going to get the Pixel 7 instead of the Pixel 8, but my vendor couldn't even get the 7 anymore. It's like they pulled back all the unsold inventory or something.

I can understand that and if my work was offering me a super fancy phone you better believe I would take it. Having never experienced a fancy phone I don't know what I am missing unless someone else is looking something up on their phone and are able to do it is 1/10th the amount of time it would take me on my piece of shit.

Your situation about not being able to go back was something that I struggled with once I started to have to pay for my own travel. When I was working in USA I always traveled business class. Once I found out how much more that costs than economy if you are paying for it yourself it was a very tough transition for me to move back to "steerage." I'm kind of used to it by now though.

I only flew first class once and it was on a connecting flight that lasted maybe 40 minutes from gate to gate, so it was kind of a waste. It was amazing for that short time though! The camera is pretty impressive on this phone. Since I don't have a DSLR and most photos these days are taken on phones, that's kind of important to me. It's supposed to have some interesting AI stuff in the works too, but I am kind of on the fence about all of that.

I only got first class once as well and it was because my company needed me in Dallas immediately. I was delighted that the only tickets left were first class and I was told to get there by any means necessary. Like your experience, it was only a short flight from Chicago to Dallas but it was a wonderful experience. They knew my name in first class and treat you totally different up there. Also, businessmen were wheeling and dealing on the flight exchanging business cards and finding out if there was any way that we could further develop whatever careers we were involved in. It is truly a different world up there in the front of the plane.

That's crazy! I've always wanted to fly first class again some day, but like you said, the fees are just insane. It's unbelievable!

Phones have such little longevity to them that it really doesn't make sense to get the real high end ones. I felt that way about laptops for a while, but they're a bit more justified if you need portable power. Took me almost a decade to finally get a laptop because of frugality.

My phone is still some cheap Chinese pile of shit though. I've often thought of replacing it with something a bit better, but again that realisation that it'll be obsolete within two years doesn't justify the cost.

I'm frugal with just about everything though. I rarely buy clothes or things I actually need. My entire life can fit into a backpack!

YOu and I have a lot in common my friend. I don't accumulate stuff anymore and most of my clothes are a decade old or more. I don't care much about fashion and am perfectly ok with that. While I am more of a hoarder than you my entire life fits into two suitcases and a dog carrier.

most of my clothes are a decade old or more.

Hahaha I can relate to this so much too. My girlfriend is always noting how everything I have has holes in it somehow. It isn't even something I really noticed until she pointed it out, for me it was just normal. I just keep clothes until they're completely gone.

The largest purchase I've ever made was the laptop I'm now using. I put it off for so long, but it was an essential item for working and travelling. It took me about a decade and quite literally making it a necessity for me to finally get one. I joke that I had to move through two countries in order to give in.

I think that laptops are one of the few things on the planet that it is worth getting a higher end one of. Right now I am using a cheap one because I had hoped that my gaming rig could be upgraded but I liked how lightweight and transportable my new much cheaper laptop is that I never bothered to see if I could upgrade it. It is currently sitting next to me in a chair being all but completely ignored.

Yeah that's pretty much why I took so long to get one. I knew I couldn't get a cheaper one, and biting down and paying that premium just felt horrible. That said, I love this thing so much. I can't wait to do more with it. Already noticing my productivity has increased.

Ah, I had a similar problem. My phone broke and after looking at the prices of the newest models I ended up buying a Samsung which came out in 2019. 🤣🤣🤣

But even though it's an old model it has something the newest ones don't: Double SIM + SD Card.

For some reason they stopped doing that.

i absolutely must have double SIM and yeah, I noticed that was being phased out as well and I can't understand why they would do that. Probably trying to force us all that need 2 sims to have 2 phones.

Yay! 🤗
