I'm not good with numbers and would make a terrible accountant - only someone who wanted their accounting completely fucked up would employ me - so it's fortunate I'm not an accountant.
I have one though and this week have spent some time with her getting my income tax return sorted out for the 2023/2024 year. I'm happy to be getting a nice (chunky) return based on deductions and other factors and in a couple of weeks when it's paid through to my bank I'll be dropping the funds into some investments to get the money working for me. It's always a good week when I find out I'm getting a good tax return.
I've had a good week so far in general; nothing great happened, it's just been nice, non-offensive or complicated from a work or personal perspective and, of course, here we are moving into Friday and the end of the week. I'd be lying if I didn't say I've been counting down the days, hours, minutes. I like my weekends so look forward to them coming around.
Work has been good this week, a few challenges here and there but nothing I couldn't handle and I learned from them so that's always a positive. Personally, the week has been good. I've been ploughing through episodes of House of Cards and am now into the final season (season six) so that should get sorted by the end of the weekend and I can get onto the next thing I'll watch which, at this stage, is unconfirmed. I've also been doing a lot of rowing on my rowing machine, interval training, and I'm feeling pretty fit...it's lower impact than running so swapped to that while a foot injury heals.
We're going out on Saturday night, an event and dinner afterwards, with a group of about twenty people. I'm looking forward to it as this group of people don't gather a lot, maybe only twice a year, but it's always a good night in which many stories will be exaggerated, embellished or lied about and there'll be a lot of laughs...and eye rolling from the wives and partners because all us blokes can be...well, exasperatingly annoying when we start telling lies about the old days. It is what it is though, and will be a good night.
Other than that, the week has passed uneventfully and my weekend will also.
What about you? Have you had a good week, got something great planned for the weekend, or have you had a shit week and are planning an even shittier weekend? What about your tax situation? I know you may have different financial year-ends than here in Australia (it's June 30 here), but have you had a pleasant surprise, or a nasty one, with your income tax lodgment? Feel free to comment if you like, or don't.

Accountants, tax...Ah I remember them well. Happily I've now retired to a life of ignoring both, but keep that under your hat.
We've had a week of gale force winds here. My pear tree broke in half, my guttering fell down, my vegetable garden gate was blown away and many of my peas lost their lives. On second thoughts, perhaps dealing with tax and accountants was easier:)
It was a little windy here too, but no pear trees, or any others, were harmed as far as I know. It sounds like those winds were quite damaging and you sure incurred your share of damage.
I don't like wind, or the damage it can cause I guess, but I'd like being retired from work; I'll get there sooner or later but in the meantime I have to deal with accountants. (I like mine, knows about crypto and always seems to get me a nice return.)
Shit week, taxation is theft, fuck the fed.
Yeah, tax is shit but it's a reality for me and most others here. I'm happy to have a bit coming back my way but unhappy about paying it in the first place.
@galenkp You really had a great week so far. But for me it has not been so.
I wasn't feeling well physically, mentally and financially. This has limit my potential for the week.couple with that I don't think I have any thing planed for the weekend cause of my health status
A shame you've not had a good week but I wonder what you're doing, or have done to make next week better.
I got an auto-assessment for my tax that comes out to them owing me a few cents... If I go to someone to help me with the Tax, I am fairly certain that I shall be able to get some money back from it.
A few cents towards something you need to buy is a few cents closer to buying it. Ok, just trying to out a positive spin on it...a few cents isn't much at all. Why don't youbuse an accountant?
We recently got a new car. So we'll be going on a roadtrip this weekend to break it in, and eat some good food along the way.
I hate doing my taxes. Having different sources of income makes it even more complicated. Good thing you have an accountant to help you with it.
That's exciting, always worthy of a road trip!
You're right on the multiple source of income thing, complex, but diversification is important. I get the impression you do your tax yourself, not something I'd be able to do due to the complexity: Businesses, income streams and so on. I tax deduct the accounting costs in the following year's tax though so it's ok.
I don't know if you're doing this already. But if you declare/include your profits/income from Hive, maybe you can ask your accountant about additional deductibles. I've heard that YT vloggers can write their travel to different countries as an expense since they made a video of it.
It's been a pretty busy week getting ready for the start of the school year here, but I was able to sneak away and go fishing yesterday and I went disc golfing on Monday night, so that made it pretty awesome. Plus today after work I get to go camping along the shores of Lake Huron, so I can't really complain!
Mid week sneaks are the best, helps recharge and the week go by more easily.
Do you live in my past or in the future hahaha 30th June? That's great! I'd rather you live in my future and tell me what happens!
Foot injury... take care of it, I had one two months ago... I stepped wrong on a walk in the botanical garden... it's fine now.
The week... quiet, I had things planned but I had to change my plans... but what can I say today is not Friday, it's Thursday! Family day! You got me confused hahaha
Yes I have plans for the weekend which will be much better than the week! I guarantee it!
For the rest everything is perfect. I'll make myself some tereré, which is cold mate... haven't tried mate yet? What a barbarity!😂
I live in Australia so get to the future many hours before the rest of the world. Trust me, it's pretty good here...you'll get to the future eventually, but not just yet. Anyway, by the time you get here, to the future, I'll be on down the road in a different future and you'll have to catch up all over...but you never will...unless you come to Australia.
Nah, haven't tried that drink yet, mate. One day.
Hi Galen, my week has been fine, professionally with some complicated but expected moments.
With Hacienda ( the taxi) I have a small problem, which I guess I will solve soon. It does not keep me awake at night (I don't know if there is such an expression in English).
And this weekend, I think it will be less entertaining than yours, I only have planned a visit to a museum.
And I take this opportunity to answer here the last comment you left me. It's hard, but little by little I'm releasing ballast.
I hope you have a happy Friday and a better weekend.
Complications occur from time to time, in fact sometimes a lot, but that gives us the opportunity to evaluate, improve and move in new and (hopefully) better directions and towards a better outcome. Hopefully things are working out.
I like going to the museum, always interesting and something to learn. I hope you have a good time.. and also, feel free to release ballast any time, I don't mind.
Thank you very much Galen for offering me a space to vent. I take note, and I keep it in mind. On this occasion, the lack of explanation may make it seem like I've had a bad return from vacation, but that's not the case.
As for work I have a couple of new patients and it was foreseeable that one of them would decompensate in my absence, this is a bit stressful but it is also part of my profession.
And as for taxes, the Ministry of Finance does not balance my accounts. Last year I paid for a building work in my mother's apartment, and I made other purchases for her that appear in my name, although the invoices are in my mother's name. I think the problem goes that way, although I won't know for sure until I meet with them.
Thank you very much for the offer, I won't forget it.
A big hug.
Tax deducted from source over here if you are a civil servant and they're damn lucky because that's the only way they could have gotten any dime off of me. They are just 'binging' on tax payers' money.
Nothing much lined up for the weekend but I'm glad it's finally here.
Taxes are inevitable, as is the weekend.
