I read some news a few weeks ago that someone was picking up Boletus somewhere in Poland. Those of you who live in the Northern Hemisphere might know that this is definitely not the time for these mushrooms to grow. They show up in the late summer and fall when the temperature drops a bit and there is enough rain. It looks like they got very confused...
Back to the lovely, round puffballs, though. These I found in the fall while walking around forests. Not too many, and they are not the easiest to spot either. Small, brown, or beige balls hide well among fallen leaves and dead grasses.
Except for these yellow ones. This group I could see from a distance. They found a nice spot inside a rotten stump, as if they were hiding in the little, cozy house from all the nasty stuff outside. Smart :)
They were also much bigger than the usual brown, spiky ones. The largest one was about the size of an apple. The skin resembles a lovely, crunchy roll or an oatmeal cookie.
It was the only time that I saw these. And when I went back to the same spot some days later, they were still there.
And that was the only spot where I have seen this specific type.
Other, more common to me I could find puffballs here and there throughout the forest. Some would grow very close to the road on sandy, grassy patches.
Small, more like a walnut and covered in tiny little needles, or something that looks like wet fur.
Adorable little things.
Here is a bonus blurry artistic shot :p

At first, I thought vanilla ice cream, sprinkled with crumbled biscuit pieces :))
Ohhh oh! Even better than bread!
Or lets eat bread first and then ice cream with biscuits....

In the first few pics, they were like rough eggs hehe..

They look more like a crust of freshly baked bread. I really want to slice them and spread some jam into it. haha
great shots and beautiful mushroom my friend.
And now I am getting hungry again...
Thank you!
Oh, that's interesting. I've never seen such mushrooms. Aren't these mushrooms that explode when you kick them and gas comes out of them?
The small ones yes - the mature ones will release grey cloud of spores. I suppose the yellow on too. I didn't try :p
Some of them look quite scary because of their textures. I wouldn't touch them haha.
They wont bite you :D
Good morning dear friend @ewkaw how are you?
To correctly identify a mushroom you need to have a lot of knowledge, given that there are many very similar mushrooms and the differences between them are almost imperceptible.
As for the mushroom you found, it is very attractive, I love its structure and the resemblance to oatmeal bread.
Thank you very much for sharing these findings.
have a great weekend
I agree.. there is so many similar to each other it is very easy to confuse them. But even without the name I enjoy shooting them :)
Thanks and have a nice day!
The first few resemble pinning Pholiota squarrosa. But if they are the size of an apple they are probably Scleroderma citrinum aka the common earthball that isn't really so common as I've only seen it once.
Scleroderma citrinum it is! At least after comparing them to the google search.
I guess I was pretty lucky to find one :)
Thanks for the name!
What you say is very true @ewkaw, those mushrooms look a lot like freshly baked bread
Yep :D
wow
this is incredible! I never believed that was fungi not until i took a deep look at it again
Thanks! Yea they dont look like that from up close :)
Ay, I let out a sigh of relief when I read this because the first thing I did was look at the photos without reading, and I was already thinking it was food. So, battling mentally, I told myself:
"But woman, you always see cookies and food in the mushrooms that EwkaW brings... They will think that you don't eat well 😕"
Haha I see cookies everywhere, so you are not alone :D
I have seen many macro photographs but yours is unique and beautiful. The detail can be easily seen in this photograph. @ewkaw
Thanks a lot. Glad you liked them :)
This beautiful and unique mushroom, I saw it for the first time, it's really beautiful, my friend.
Thank you!
