I'm really getting a lot of mileage out of MUBI. While I already have a list of movies I want to watch that are available on the platform in my profile within the app (plus some alerts activated for when certain titles become available again), I like to check out some recommendations from the curators or see the list of recently added movies and in one of those sections I found this Swedish movie from last year that I watched last Sunday night.

Realmente le estoy sacando provecho a MUBI. Si bien ya tengo en mi perfil dentro de la aplicación una lista de películas que quiero ver y que están disponibles en la plataforma (además de algunas alertas activadas para cuando vuelvan a disponer de ciertos títulos), me gusta revisar algunas recomendaciones de los curadores o ver la lista de películas agregadas recientemente y en una da esas secciones encontré esta película sueca del año pasado que vi la noche del domingo pasado.

At first glance, the film is promoted as a romantic comedy. And it is, of course, but it's also so much more. The reason I decided to watch it was because at the end of the synopsis there was a section that said related films that featured Shiva Baby, Francs Ha and Falle Leaves. I had already seen all three and I liked all three because yes, they are romantic comedies, funny, with hilarious moments, but with an intelligent sense of humor, capable of dealing in a funny way with some very serious subjects, but also of putting the emphasis on drama when necessary. We're not talking about Hollywood romantic comedies in the style of How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days, but something more thought out, with a more sharpened eye and a daring humor on less superficial subjects. That being said, in a nutshell, Hypnosen tells the story of André and Vera, a young entrepreneurial couple who have developed an app that focuses on monitoring women's health. Fertility, menstrual cycle, blood levels, and more can be monitored by this app that, according to its creators, can help many women around the world, especially in those countries where these types of topics are still taboo and where many times, due to the shame of referring to these things, a medical condition can become complicated to the point of being irreversible or causing the death of the patient.

En primera instancia, la película es promocionada como una comedia romántica. Y lo es, claro, pero también es mucho más. La razón por la que decidí verla fue porque al final de la sinopsis había un apartado que decía películas relacionadas en donde aparecían Shiva Baby, Francs Ha y Falle Leaves. Yo ya había visto las tres y las tres me habían gustado porque sí, son comedias románticas, divertidas, con momentos graciosos, pero con un sentido del humor inteligente, capaz de tratar de manera divertida algunos temas muy serios, pero también de poner el acento en el drama cuando es necesario. No estamos hablando de comedias románticas hollywoodenses al estilo de How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days, sino de algo más pensado, con un ojo más agudo y un humor más atrevido sobre temas menos superficiales. Dicho esto, en pocas palabras, Hypnosen (La hipnosis) relata la historia de André y Vera una joven pareja de emprendedores que han desarrollado una aplicación que se centra en monitorear la salud femenina. Fertilidad, ciclo menstrual, niveles sanguíneos y demás pueden ser vigilados por esta app que, de acuerdo a sus creadores, puede ayudar a muchas mujeres en el mundo, especialmente en aquellos países en los que este tipo de temas aún son tabú y en donde muchas veces por la vergüenza que representa referirse a estas cosas una condición médica puede complicarse al punto de ser irreversible o de causar la muerte del paciente.

Sounds great, right? And it is. That is why it caught the attention of the producers of an entrepreneurship competition in which, for three days, they will be advised by a professional in the field and then they will have the opportunity to make a presentation to potential investors, which could mean that their applications, their projects can be financed. In addition to the prestige that would come from being able to win the famous competition, of course.

Suena genial, ¿cierto? Y es que lo es. Por eso llama la atención de los productores de un concurso de emprendedores en el cual, durante tres días serán asesorados por un profesional en la materia y luego tendrán la oportunidad de hacer una presentación ante posibles inversores, lo que podría representar que sus aplicaciones, sus proyectos puedan ser financiados. Además del prestigio que sería poder ganar el famoso concurso, claro.

So far, so good. We meet the couple, we realize that André is the leader of the project, but Vera is somehow the soul of the idea, and not just because she's the woman. Although they seem to agree on everything, Vera seems to be the one who always gives in, the more submissive of the two, and André seems to be the more organized, the more concerned about the seriousness and formality of the project and what the opportunity of the contest represents. So, before going to the three-day counseling seminar, Vera goes to a hypnotherapy consultation because she wants to stop smoking. In the consultation, which is not a simple hypnosis session, but a mix of hypnotism with psychology led by a millennial psychologist with tattoos on both arms, Vera begins to talk about the reasons why she smokes, but she also talks about other things, about her past, about her family and about the reasons why she often does or stops doing things and the same thing happens to her as to millions of people around the world: she just wants to be accepted. So, at the end of the session, the hypnotherapist pronounces a few words, counts down, and sends Vera back to the real world, where the girl begins to behave differently than she had been doing before. It's true that the therapy session is very early in the film, but what has been shown up to that point is enough to be able to notice the radical changes in Vera's behavior, which can be summarized in the following attitude: doing and saying what she genuinely wants to do and say.

Hasta allí todo va bien. Conocemos a la pareja, nos damos cuenta de que André es el líder del proyecto, pero de alguna forma Vera es el alma de la idea, y no sólo por ser la mujer. Aunque parecen estar de acuerdo en todo, Vera parece ser la que siempre cede, la más sumisa de los dos y André parece ser el más organizado, el más preocupado por la seriedad y la formalidad del proyecto y de lo que representa la oportunidad del concurso. Entonces, antes de acudir al seminario de tres días de asesorías, Vera acuda a una consulta de hipnoterapia porque quiere dejar de fumar. En la consulta, que no es una simple sesión de hipnosis, sino una mezcla de hipnotismo con psicología dirigida por una psicóloga millenial con tatuajes en ambos brazos, Vera comienza a hablar de las razones por las cuales fuma, pero también habla de otras cosas, de su pasado, de su familia y de los motivos por los cuales muchas veces hace o deja de hacer cosas y le ocurre lo mismo que a millones de personas en todo el mundo: sólo quiere ser aceptada. Entonces, al concluir la sesión, la hipnoterapista pronuncia unas palabras, hace un conteo regresivo y envía a Vera de vuelta al mundo real, en donde la chica comienza a comportarse de manera distinta a como lo venía haciendo. Es cierto que la sesión de terapia está muy al inicio de la película, pero lo mostrado hasta entonces es suficiente para poder notar los radicales cambios en el comportamiento de Vera y que pueden resumirse en la siguiente actitud: hacer y decir lo que genuinamente quiere hacer y decir.

In other words, Vera now appears as a more honest person, with herself and with the world; a world in which there's a lot of emphasis on being honest, on showing oneself as one is, but in which this message, in essence, is counterfeit currency because it's one more facet of social hypocrisy. The world wants us to behave within the limits of what is permitted by social expectations. The flag of freedom is raised, but too much freedom can be a problem for people.

En otras palabras, Vera aparece ahora como una persona más honesta, consigo misma y con el mundo; un mundo en el que se insiste mucho en ser honesto, en mostrarse tal cual se es, pero en el que ese mensaje, en el fondo, es moneda falsa porque se trata de una faceta más de la hipocresía social. El mundo quiere que nos comportemos dentro de los márgenes de lo permitido por las expectativas sociales. Se enarbola la bandera de la libertad, pero demasiada libertad puede ser un problema para las personas.

Without going into too much detail, so that you are surprised by the film, carrying out the seminar and the presentation becomes complicated because Vera's new attitude doesn't contribute to the rigidity of social formalities. Some scenes of this new Vera are funny, but some of her occurrences are quite dramatic and, although not tragic, they do have irreparable consequences for the couple. Like André, the viewer wonders, who is this woman? Is Vera hypnotized or just uninhibited? How can we get the old Vera back? But most importantly, do we want the old Vera back? Will the old Vera want to come back? The script by director Ernst De Geer (who also directs) together with Mads Stegger is very good, intelligent, ironic, uncomfortable, but as free and honest as the new Vera; the performances by Asta Kamma August and Herbert Nordrum are wonderful, as is the photography by Jonathan Bjerstedt. All of this leads to a great film that uses intelligent (but also risky) humor to talk about the price of being yourself and the sometimes difficult task of accepting the other person as they are. If you were in André's place and from one day to the next your partner changed their behavior radically and, let's suppose, this new version turned out to be their true self, repressed until then, would you leave them? Would you blame them for lying to you? Did they really lie? Would you still love them? I recommend that you go to MUBI to see Hypnosen and try to answer these questions. Do you want to see the film? Sin entrar en mucho detalle, para que se sorprendan con la película, llevar a cabo el seminario y la presentación se vuelve complicado porque la nueva actitud de Vera no contribuye a la rigidez de los formalismos sociales. Algunas escenas de esta nueva Vera son divertidas, pero algunas de sus ocurrencias son bastante dramáticas y, si bien no trágicas, si son consecuencias irreparables para la pareja. Al igual que André, el espectador se pregunta, ¿quién es esta mujer? ¿Vera está hipnotizada o sólo desinhibida? ¿cómo podemos recuperar a la Vera anterior?, pero lo más importante, ¿queremos que vuelva la Vera anterior? ¿querrá volver la Vera de antes? El guión del director Ernst De Geer (quien también dirige) junto a Mads Stegger es muy bueno, inteligente, irónico, incómodo, pero tan libre y honesto como la nueva Vera; las actuaciones de Asta Kamma August y Herbert Nordrum son maravillosas, igual que la fotografía de Jonathan Bjerstedt. Todo esto lleva a configurar una gran película que utiliza el humor inteligente (pero también arriesgado) para hablar del precio de ser uno mismo y de la, a veces difícil, tarea de aceptar al otro tal cual es. Si estuvieras en el lugar de André y de un día para otro tu pareja cambiara diametralmente su comportamiento y, supongamos, esta nueva versión resultara ser su verdadero yo, hasta entonces reprimido. ¿la abandonarías? ¿le reclamarías por haberte mentido? ¿acaso realmente mintió? ¿la amarías igualmente? Les recomiendo que vayan a MUBI a ver Hypnosen y traten de responderse estas preguntas, ¿les dan ganas de ver la película? Los leo en los comentarios.
