That pretty much sums up my relationship with them as well. Back in the day I used a student version of maya but couldnt render without watermarks. we used it for research papers and it was part of the reason i chose Blender in the first place. at that time it was far behind maya but today I dont think that difference is even noticeable. I have a few friends in the PR business who report a quite agressive license department who called them regularly and wanted to come check wkether it could really be right that they owned "only 2 licenses" I read the tldr license agreement once and you actually gave them the right to come into your office to check ?! that was quite a few years back, and I dont know if it is like that anymore, but i put me off . I am still not really convinced that fusion is what I want, and since i do intend to use it in a professional context at some point I feel morally obliged to either buy a license at some point or switch to something where the relationship between license and my earnings are closer to reasonable
