Some fairly belated 2025 resolutions; in software, art, and general musings

in #2024yesterday (edited)

Hey, glad to see you check in again!

This was a fairly strange start of year to me. I was actually fairly offline come the actual turn of the new year, walked back and forth around family to do a few errands, lots of belated Happy New Years, and then I got sick. I've barely recovered by now.

Nonetheless, I've made good use of the extra time I've had to think about my goals for 2025, which span broad categories. I'll skip the more personal and samey stuff, like getting a job or going through courses to fill my résumé -- such hustle is but the reality for young people these days, for better or for worse -- and get to more interesting projects and whatnot.

projects

  • Work on Condensed Musicality (condemus), the hyper-flexible music engine in Rust
  • Get the Rust version of Loot & Roam to a decent stage, with at least most of the engine-level code done, a model editor (for ship makes, cannons, etc), and just in general a sturdy foundation for future contributors - yes, it might take more than a year to push out even a basic playable demo of this ambitious project!
  • Expand my musical portfolio (especially once I have condemus fleshed out), trying new genres and a more organic sound at some point
  • Seek to participate in existing indie / open-source game projects, with pull requests and co-development contributions

personal & social

  • Learn German to at least an intermediate level, and/or get started with Dutch
    • I might have to pick one at some point. One cursed language is enough!
  • Get into urban running (even though I really don't have the spare weight to shed 😅)
  • Expand my friend circles, potentially reuniting with former high school classmates (with most of whom I've kept barely any contact)
  • Attend more events, particularly art ones. in my town
  • Funny posters around my neighbourhood - like cat pictures, subtitled such as to have people send selfies with the cat picture behind them to my email inbox!
  • More active participation in my local party, o Partido Socialismo e Liberdade, including lectures on urbanism & sustainable logistics

Those are definitely many goals, but I'm known to be ambitious and happy-go-lucky. Hopefully these qualities start working in my favour. After all, I've already worked in a handful of projects that have had fruitful results. Then again, being handsome helps. ;)
